I was going to try out barre chords today, but I heard from a friend that some of the weird positions you have to put your hands in can cause a life ending brain aneurysm. I assume this is very rare, but it makes me a little nervous all the same. Is there some safety precautions that I can take to avoid a life ending brain aneurysm?
Your friend is talking rubbish. Don't listen.

LOL
Aluminum foil helmet should do the trick!!! It'll also keep brain eating aliens from zapping you up to their flying saucers to dine on your grey matter.
If your serious, barre chords are more about finger position than death grip pressure. If you keep that in mind while you are practicing them, they get easier and easier all by themselves.
Personally, if given the choice of either barre chords or "cowboy chords" (as my guitar teacher friend called them), I'd take the barre chords as they are more versatile.

No it's true actually. There have been reports that badly held barre chords can lead to a desire to go on such shows as X Factor! And the thing is there is NO cure.
Perhaps it isn't the chords themselves, but the frustration caused by attempting to master them. I suggest the liberal application of beer to the process to mitigate the risk.

A fine idea. Bar chords are almost always easier than barre chords :)

Try on an electric guitar first, they are much easier on an electric guitar than on an acoustic to start with. Bars can give worse outcomes at times LOL
If that were the case, there wouldn't be so many people playing guitar who are still living. Your friend is either pulling your leg or completely misinformed. Dive into to barre chords and do your thing. Learning barre chords is hard enough without having to worry about phantom ghosts and goblins.
