Jimmy Page, Angus Young, Slash, BB King, Eric Clapton, and many others...

After years of listening I decided to jump to the other side and start playing 8)

Well I've said this a thousand times by now, but: the song LAYLA, by Clapton (derek and the dominoes) heard that opening riff and I had to learn how to play it.

For me, it was actually boredom!

I was stuck spending a summer at home, away from university where I was now living my life, had no job, and had seen just about every show on ABC1 and Cartoon Network 100 times.

My mums guitar was sat in the corner, so one day, completely without regard, I just picked it up and stared to try and play some of the notes. It was completely out of tune, having not been used for years, but at that time what did I know!

After about 30 minutes I got my mum to tune it for me, and she taught me Em and Am chords. That summer turned out to be OK after all!

...and the rest, as they say, is history...

For me it was the impracticalitys of owning a drum kit which was always my first passion.
I've recently purchased a drum kit though and I still find myself picking up my guitar more although I intend to keep learning both.

Chris Cornell's solo acoustic sessions got me into guitar!

Any electric guitar solo or John Denver acoustic ballad I ever heard.

Music is the universal language.

It was to do something with the girlfriend at that time.

That relationship ended, the guitar got better

This summer, I was in a "night of fado" in Lisbon, listening a voice, a Spanish guitar and a couple of Portuguese guitars. It made me remember when I played several years ago and when I returned at Madrid I started to learn/play again.

It was my wife's idea. She thought I needed a hobby. She didn't think that drinking was a very constructive hobby.

Mostly it was listening to Daniel Ash's acoustic playing on songs like Saudade and American Dream that gave me this intense desire to do the same thing. There are others but he's my main reason.

wow, really cool stories all around.

i guess i should answer my own posting so here goes:

i was around 10 or 11 years old and my older brother and his friend started playing guitar so that got me interested.

then i heard Steve Vai and Slash and it was a done deal.
