Rob Hampton?
No -- it's just a coincident that we have the sme first name. I'm just a beginner and here's what I do for American Pie. I use a "D DUUDU" strum for most of the verse. I start changing cords just before the last up stroke so it really rings as all open -- usually just hitting the first three strings. This gives sometime to get my fingers over to the chord. Where there are two chords in a measure I use two downstrokes. For the chorus I use "DDU" for most of it and a single down strum for the EM and A chord. I also start changing chords just before the up stroke here as well.
