I'm getting a kind of screeching noise when I have distortion on, particularly on upstrokes. Anyone know how to fix this?

yea, does it act like feedback?
another idea:... we all know that strings vibrate. look at them like a wave.
now if two notes are similar the wave will look similar so then the sound will be natural.
if two notes are slightly off. then the wave pattern will be different. and perhaps those two waves will clash and vibrate at opposites of one another.
oscillation. and then you hear it as a screech or discordant sound.

I am thinking this becuse when tuning one string with another I hear a wave or vibration. when they move together the strings are in tune. when they dont move topgether the strings are off with one another.

with a distortion pedal on perhaps two notes that arent insync are having that argument you are hearing.

and then too distortion pedals can wreak havoc on notes. sometimes they sound awesome and sometimes not just my two cents.

I don't think it's feedback. I think dogbite might be onto something though.
I notice most while playing this riff:

E|---------------------------------------------------|
b|---------------------------------------------------|
g|-----------------3--3-0------------------6--6-0----|
d|-3--3-3--x-x-x-x-3--3-0--6--6-6-x-x-x-x--6--6-0----|
a|-3--3-3--x-x-x-x-1--1-0--6--6-6-x-x-x-x--4--4-0----|
e|-1--1-1--x-x-x-x---------4--4-4-x-x-x-x------------|

I normally get the screeching noise on those open strums. So could that be it? Notes rubbing together?

another thought One Wing.

third, fifth, seventh and tweleth frets all are harmonic frets.
meaning at those frets you can get the harmonic by touching the finger on the fret when plucking.
you know what I mean?

because the string does sound on both sides of the fretted note at those points.
the string is divided in proportion as we all know at the 12th fret. it is similar at the 3,5,7.
by looking at your Tab you are hitting some of those positions.
I donno.
maybe what you are getting is normal. screech is subjective.
but if you dont like what is happening then it is problematic.

maybe because of the distortion you are getting amplifies overtones or harmonics.

I had a distortion pedal that gave me all kinds of extra sounds. some I liked some I didnt.
