... My pick keeps hitting them when I'm trying to play scales! Any tips?

Leave less of the pick exposed, ie. less pointy end.
Easier for picking single notes but can be a bit uncomfortable for strumming.

Could also be the height of the pups -- they can be lowered.

gee, pick in front of them. actually, I am not being flip. there is a sweet spot for picking just in front of the middle pick up.
it is for a strat. I imagine the pickup spacing is similar for single coil type guitars.
(it is where the 28th fret would be.).

Most people are way too heavy-handed...gouging at the strings or squeezing the frets too hard.
