I read the sticky, and it was all good advice but i have a question. Right now, i really don't have the time to get lessons. I know i can make time to practice everyday for a couple of hours but that would be at night. My question is, is it possible to learn how to play the guitar by your self? If so is there any advice you can give me. I'm a 17 year old high school student. I bought my first guitar yesterday, http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=guitar/s=electric/search/detail/base_pid/518677/?c_tid=topseller

I don't know anything about chords.. that kind of stuff seems scary and complicated... should i start trying to learn them now? My guitar just shipped so it wont be here for a few days so i start studying them even though i dont have the guitar yet? The type of music id like to play is Metal and some punk.

was that a good choice for a first guitar purchase? So.. does anyone have any advice for me?

Thanks..

Welcome to the site, and the guitar :)

That was a fine choice for a first guitar.

Suggestions: Find a friend who plays, ask them to show you a few chords, get you started.

Along with that (or without if it isnt possible) look threw the lessons here. Learn some chords. I believe there is a lesson on this site for someone who is just starting to play.

If not I wrote a little guide for beginners that I can send to you if you want, just to get you in the right direction.

Also, what got me going was a dvd that teaches you to play. There are tons of them, check out the reviews section or look in a music shop. It really really helped me, and I've been teaching myself for 3 years!

I started without lessons and found the information on the following link very helpful in conjuction with the lessons here at Guitar Noise:

http://guitar.about.com/library/weekly/aa071200a.htm

It takes you through basic guitar techniques/chords/strumming etc. in a logical sequence - with plenty of mp3s to hear and play along with.

Also, as mentioned find someone who plays that will "jam" with you - there is nothing like playing with another to learn and grow!

Bob: cool, looks like I ain't the only one who started with both GN and about.guitar. Some really nice stuff over there, and I still remember playing 'Leaving on a jet plane' and 'The gambler'

Also, here are some cool metal / punk songs you can learn easily:

Mama I'm Comin' Home - Ozzy Osbourne
(Guitar must be down-tuned on all strings by 1/2 step)

Fade to Black - Metallica
American Idiot - Green Day
Blitzkrieg Bop - The Ramones
Back in Black - AC/DC
Good Riddance - Green Day

You should really learn chords. The faster you learn chords, the faster you can start sound like you know what you're doing :P

Henry Garza, Saul Hudson, and Darrell Abbott could not be here tonight, but they all had sex and are proud to announce the birth of their two-headed baby, Rodya S. Thompson.
