Alright so I am trying to play very simple songs, Like knockin on heavens door among others, that only have 3-4 chords right? Well how do you know how to strum the songs? Like some songs are down down up down up, Etc...... When I read tabs on songs, what is the universal way to strum them? Or what are the different type of strumming methods? Thanks

I've never been good with different generic types of strumming patterns - although I'm sure you can find some - if I only could remember where...

I tend to go with what comes naturally - what capture the character of the song best. Maybe there is a strong drum beat on 1 and 3 that needs to be accentuated, or there are some triplets running that can be played, or a reggea feel with accent on the offbeats or ...

You need to get a feel for the songismy best and only advice. Start out simple maybe only one stroke per meassure and add on.

Since you're asking 'bout a Dylan song I will offer a small extra service :-)
[Mama give this strum patterns to me, I just can't find them anywhere ...]

I tried to come up with a strumming pattern for you, but I'm not sure how to do it. when I started think about the song the only thing I was sure about was the need to strum the two first beats in the first meassures of every verse.
Maybe D D du du is a start. And then some more fill in between the text lines, and some variation occationally?

I did a quick recording too - just to illustrate (off the cuff, hastily done - bear over)

Don't know if it helps tho'

lars is using a pick. to my ears, at least, lol.

I'd offer some advice, but I never really learned strumming styles that much, I just groove or try to groove, like lars does. My pops taught me the basics, so there are bits about starting out that I don't really remember in much detail.

...and the winner is ... Scrybe ! :-)

I'm using a pick yes, and sound is the result of an extremely poor laptop mic, an open kitchen window with trains passing underneath, poor right hand technique and many years of bad habits
... or try to groove, like lars does.'

rofl, the "groove or try to groove" bit was all a reference to me - I have noticed when writing songs I have a tendency to use the same rhythms. the sentence originally read "I just groove, like lars does," but then I realised ya might be hearing me play, so my secret would be well and truly blown, lol.
