Two days into my first guitar, (electric) and I'm attempting to tune with an electric tuner.
I got five of the strings correct, but the A string, the second largest , will not loosen to A. It gets so slack that it is about touching the pick up. Do I need to restring tighter, then loosen to A ? What next ? Thanks.

my best guess is that the string is not wound around the tuning peg properly. I would exchange it for a fresh string.

I'm thinking you might be in the wrong octave. The A should vibrate at 110Hz, and you might be tuning to the A below that, 55Hz. If it sounds lower than your low E, you need to tune it up quite a bit.
