That depends on the guitar and how you play it. Also, if the strings are new they'll often go out of tune until they 'settle in'.
Anyway, you should always check your tuning before every practice session.

Did you break the string tuning? Or just playing?

Sounds like you're either:

a) tuning them too high (tightening the strings too much), or
b) tuning them too fast

Which strings did you break, is it the thinner ones or the fatter ones?

What model of tuner are you using?

Rumour has it that if you play Microsoft CDs backwards you will hear Satanic messages.

Worse still, is that if you play them forwards they will install Windows.

There's some great info on these pages about changing strings:

http://home.nycap.rr.com/nils/GuitarStringing.htm

http://www.guitarteacher.com/library/gear/stringchange.htm

http://www.guitaralliance.com/guitar_lessons/getting_started/how_to_change_guitar_string.htm

Now we just need a good link that gives instructions for tuning and you're away :)

Your new to guitar. so your ears are not that accustomed to the sounds yet. So yes, you should tune the guitar every time you pick it up and practice. Get an electronic tuner to make sure your in tune. I have been playing for 3 1/2 years and I still check the tuning every time i pick up my guitar. Just because it's a good habit to be in so that when your ear is training to the tones, it is trained to the RIGHT tones.

Same here. I check everytime. Atleast every time that I am seriously practicing. If I am just goofing I guess I dont tune it. 99% of the time I tune.

If you're just starting out, always start each session trying to tune by ear followed by tuning it with a tuner. After a little while you should be able to tune using just your ears, and soon after that you'll never need to check your tuning since it'll be rather obvious to you if anything is out of tune. After that: tune when your guitar is detuned.

Maybe this will help:

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
