In looking through guitar catalogs, wesites, stores, etc., there are many different types of acoustic guitars. Looking strictly at the steel string acoustics, not classicals, there are the :
Dreadnaughts (D's)
Jumbos
OO's
OM's
M's

Some are more "curvy" in the body, some less. Are there general rules of thumb for which types produce which kinds of sound, or are best for which types of music. People seem to have suggestions for which type of electric to get based n which type of sound you are going for.

Dreadnaughts seem to be good for all types, rock, reggae, folk, country, etc.

Are the other sizes and types of steel stringed acoustics just as versatile?

I know there are no absolutes, but are there rules of thumb?

Well obviously (but not always)bigger guitars like jumbos and drednaughts are going to be somewhat louder and bassy.

If i were you, id get a simple dreadnought. They are smaller, and easier to handle/transport.
