Well, I've been trying to play Purple Haze by Hendrix. And I could probably play the entire song outside of the solo if it weren't for this chord.

EADGBe

3X543X

According to the tab that is an A chord. A is easy, obviously, but this sounds completely different from that "A" we all know. What's an easier way to play this?

Here is a link to the tab, by the way.

Thanks.

That ain't A - it's a G major chord (the notes are G, G, B, D).

The easiest way to do it is to fret the 6th string with the thumb.

The tab says it's a G chord. Same shape at the 5th fret would be an A.

As NB says, use your thumb to fret the 6th string.

If you were picking the notes out, just barre the third fret with your index finger, middle and ring finger on the other two notes.

Never assume the other fellow has intelligence equal to yours. He may have more.

Yup, thumb. Or if the problem is fretting it, don't fret the bass note, and play the rest of the chord.

Really, you should learn to fret it with your thumb, finding the easier way is usually the wrong thing to do when it comes to guitar, and many other things.

Fretting with the thumb isn't exactly my style, yet. And with this chord I have a hard time doing it with the thumb (I've tried it before, cause I know that's how it's played), and I just can't get it as of now.

So yea, any other ways? >_>

Thanks though everyone.

In that case, just do it as a barre chord 35543X The extra D on string 5 will hardly be noticeable and won't do any harm. But if you really don't want that note just lighten the pressure on it, so it will be muted.

Kevin, did you try the way I mentioned? I wasn't very clear about it, but you'd fret the bold notes.

3X543X

Fretsource's way works as well.
