so im trying to learn dont leavin me hangin on the telephone by blondie. so the main chords used are gm, eb, cm. the problem is there's so many ways to play all these chords i don't know where to start. i tried watchin the video for it but i can't figure it out. i can't use youtube unfortunately cause i'm in china at the moment and it's blocked. so how do i figure out which way the chords are played in the song??
What I would do is play it with barre chords. It's hard to tell but I think what the original guitarists did.
Alternatively, you could put a capo on the 3rd fret and play it with open Em, C and Am shapes.
Barre chords Capo on 3rd fret
e|--3---x---3--------3-------------------
B|--3---8---4--------3---------4---4-----
G|--3---8---5--------3-------------5-----
D|--5---8---5--------3-----5---5---6-----
A|--5---6---3--------3-----5---6---6-----
E|--3---x---x--------3-------------------
Gm Eb Cm Capo Em C Am

when I try to learn the chords of a song by ear I try to follow the song by just playing the low E string. that will result in giving you the root note of a chord....almost all the time, but not always.
once I have the bass or root note I can make assumptions as to what the chord is.
it takes time.
dogbite when you put it like that you make it sound easy :D
thats also the method i try, but if im honest, i have never ever been able to find the chords to any song on my own - despite many attempts
"I like to play that guitar. I have to stare at it while I'm playing it because I'm not very good at playing it."
Noel Gallagher (who took the words right out of my mouth)

it takes time and knowing barre chords. to be honest, if an open tuning is used I wouldn't be able to figure it out.
Of course, with a male singer, playing it in Em (Em, C, Am) might work well without the capo.
