Welcome to GN :!:
Enjoy your new guitar and the learning experience (which goes on forever)
I also like a variation of Joe's practice:
E A D G B E
5 4 3 2 2 1
6 5 4 3 3 2
7 6 5 4 4 3
8 7 6 5 5 4
Start on the low E, use all 4 fingers, and try to stay in time. Hit the 5th fret 6th string A, A#, B, C, then the 4th fret 5th string C#, D, etc. Go up, then back down again. Do this a little every day, in addition to practicing chord changes, for few weeks and you will notice an improvement in strength and flexibility.
This is a chromatic scale of all 1/2 steps without skipping any intermediate notes. It adds the stretch up to the next fret as you switch strings and reinforces the differance of the B string. If the stretch seems a bit of a strain, move it all down to the 7th fret.
