Nice easy one for strumming (Please dont ask me for the fingerpicking)

E G
A child arrived just the other day
A E
Came to the world in the usual way
E G
There were planes to catch, bills to pay
A E
He learned to walk while I was away
D
He was talking 'fore I knew it and when he could, he said
G E
"I'm gonna be like you, dad,
G E
You know I'm gonna be like you"
CHORUS
E G
The cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
G A
Little boy blue and a man on the moon
E G
When you comin' home son, I don't know when
D E
We'll get together then,
G E
You know we'll have a good time then
VERSE 2
E G
My son turned ten just the other day
A E
He said "Thanks for the ball dad, come on, let's play
E G
Could you teach me to throw?", I said "Not today
A E
I got a lot to do", he said "That's OK"
D G
He walked away with a smile on his face, he said
E
"I'm gonna be like him, yeah,
G E
you know I'm gonna be like him"
CHORUS
E G
The cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
G A
Little boy blue and a man on the moon
E G
When you comin' home son, I don't know when
D E
We'll get together then,
G E
You know we'll have a good time then
VERSE 3
E G
Well he came from college just the other day
A E
So much like a man I just have to say
E G
I'm proud of you, could you sit for a while
A E
He shook his head and he said with a smile
D
What I'm feeling like, dad, is to borrow the car keys
G E
see you later, can I have them please
CHORUS
E G
The cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
G A
Little boy blue and a man on the moon
E G
When you comin' home son, I don't know when
D E
We'll get together then,
G E
You know we'll have a good time then
BRIDGE - Three parts simultaneously
Electrical guitar
VERSE 4
E G
I've long since retired, my son moved away
A E
I called him up just the other day
E G
I'd like to see you, if you don't mind
A E
He said: I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time.
D
You see, my new job's hassle and the kids got the flu,
G E
but it's sure nice talking to you dad,
G E
it was sure nice talking to you.
VERSE 5
D
And as I hung up the phone is occurred to me
G E
He'd grown up just like me
G E
My boy was just like me!

For the strumming use a DDDUD pattern

Enjoy.......................

Another one I haven't heard for a while - I know Harry Chapin did the original, who did the cover?

This one's dead easy....nice job, Rodders!

Ugly Kid Joe did a cover of this. As a matter of fact, that might be the only version I've ever heard.

A Rodders arrived just the other day,
Put a song on the Database,
And with his brother, 'nother Beatles fan,
Worked out some songs from that well known band.
A little Buddy Holly, little Lennon too,
I'm going to play like you guys,
I'm going to play like you!

The guitar's in my hand and the amp's plugged in,
The strings are changed, gonna make some din,
When you gonna learn some Rolling Stones?
We'll get together then, man
You know we'll have a good old jam!!!!

Rodders,

I don't think I know this song Probably if I heard it I'd recognise it. play it to me on Sunday. Then we could try out Vic's new lyrics.

LOL

The guitar is all right John but you'll never make a living out of it! (John Lennon's Aunt Mimi)

this is a great post, has anybody figured out an intro?

There are about five things to write songs about: I'm leaving you. You're leaving me. I want you. You don't want me. I believe in something. Five subjects, and twelve notes. For all that, we musicians do pretty well.

this is a great post, has anybody figured out an intro?

I've seen many versions of the intro on Powertabs.net, but none that I like all that much.

My first reaction, and something I will try later this afternoon, would be to sort of pick at the chords in the fashion that Neil Young did on 'Needle.

....then again, the thought of plugging in my LP into my Line-6 and making it scream sounds good too. That reminds me. Have I taken my meds today?

The other version that I've heard was by Cat Stevens
I've got an intro to the Ugly Kid Joe version, that I've scanned -

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

The original recording by Harry Chapin was done with a capo on the 8th fret using some different chord shapes obviously. But it can easily sound like the record by placing a capo on the 1st fret and by playing most of the chords originally shown here... but I have some changes... sorry Rodders :( But thanks for getting me started on this tab.

Here's what I got so far...

CATS IN THE CRADLE – HARRY CHAPIN (E-Z Version)
(Capo 1st Fret / Key of F / 76 BPM)

INTRO:

VERSE 1:

E G
A CHILD ARRIVED JUST THE OTHER DAY
A E
HE CAME TO THE WORLD IN THE USUAL WAY
G
BUT THERE WERE PLANES TO CATCH, AND BILLS TO PAY
A E
HE LEARNED TO WALK WHILE I WAS AWAY
D Bm
AND HE WAS TALKING 'FORE I KNEW IT, AND AS HE GREW, HE'D SAY
G E nc G E
"I'M GONNA BE LIKE YOU, DAD. YOU KNOW I'M GONNA BE LIKE YOU.”

CHORUS:

E D
AND THE CATS IN THE CRADLE AND THE SILVER SPOON
G A
LITTLE BOY BLUE AND THE MAN ON THE MOON
E D
WHEN YOU COMIN' HOME DAD, I DON'T KNOW WHEN
G E G E
BUT WE'LL GET TOGETHER THEN, YOU KNOW WE'LL HAVE A GOOD TIME THEN

oh what a great song, I just got hooked into it this weekend and thx to you guys, I may be able to play it on my guitar!

I especailly love the chorus, stevens made it sound like the dad telling his son in the first half and as the son telling his dad in the second half all with the same lyrics...amazing!

I need to get the word to the parody!

Falling in love is like learning to play the guitar; first you learn to follow the rules, then you learn to play with your heart.
