Seems like I heard that Willie Nelson once said this was his favorite of all the songs he recorded which is saying alot.
This is an easy, lazy rhythmed song that sounds great by the campfire or on the couch late at night in a dark house. Easy chords, slow changes, E7 can be played as either [022130] or [020100] if you're lazy.

EXTRA:If you have the skill or if you want to learn, an alternating bassline sounds great in this song. A simple rhythm such as "bong" down-up "bong" down-up works great. Bass strings for the alt. bassline are pretty much standard 4&5 for the D and A7, 6&4 for the G, 6&5 for the E7. Enjoy.

My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Willie Nelson

D
I grew up dreaming of being a cowboy
G D
And loving the cowboy ways.
D
Pursuing the life of my high riding heroes
E7 A7
I burned up my childhood days.
D
I learned all the rules of a modern-day drifter
G D
Don't you hold on to nothing too long
G D G
Just take what you need from the ladies and leave them
D A7 D
With the words of a sad country song.
---
CHORUS
G D
My heroes have always been cowboys
E7 A7
And they still are it seems
G D G
Sadly in search of and one step in back of
D A7 D
Themselves and their slow moving dreams.
---

Cowboys are special with their own brand of misery
From being alone too long.
You could die from the cold in the arms of a nightmare
Knowing well that your best days are gone
Picking up hookers instead of my pen
I let the words of my youth fade away.
Old worn out saddles and old worm out memories
With no one and no place to stay.

(Chorus)

John A.

They say only a pawnshop guitar can play the blues. An eBay one does it better. A guitar's bound to feel unloved if her owner plasters pictures of her over the internet for all to see and then sells her off to the highest anonymous bidder.
