I've been working on barre chords recently and noticed a number of people looking for some easy barre chord songs. This is the one I've been working on, a great, haunting song by Bob Dylan (and covered interestingly by the White Stripes). It is really good for practicing barre chords because there are only 4 chords and they are all E-shaped. So, here we go:

Chords

Am 577555
G 355433
F 133211
E 022100

Strumming: I use D/D/dudu/D for the verses. For the chorus, for the first line, I use DUDUDUDU D (let it ring), and for the second line of the chorus, I usually do a second down strum and palm mute it. So it kind of looks like this:
F E
One more cup of coffee for the road.
D U D U D U D U D (let it ring)

F E
One more cup of coffee ‘for I go,
D U D U D U D U D D(p.m.)

NC Am G F E
To the valley below.

One More Cup of Coffee (Valley Below) - Bob Dylan

Intro
Am G F E

Verse 1

Am
Your Breath is sweet, your eyes are like
G
Two jewels in the sky
F
Your back is straight your hair is smooth
E
On the pillow where you lie.
Am
But I don't sense affection
G
No gratitude or love.
F E
Your loyalty is not me but to the stars above

Chorus

F E
One more cup of coffee for the road.
F E
One more cup of coffee for I go,
NC Am G F E
To the valley below.

Verse 2

Am
Your daddy he's an outlaw
G
And a wanderer by trade.
F
He'll teach you how to pick an choose
E
And how to throw the blade.
Am
He oversees his kingdom
G
So no stranger does intrude.
F
His voice it trembles as he calls out
E
For another plate of food

Chorus

F E
One more cup of coffee for the road.
F E
One more cup of coffee for I go,
NC Am G F E
To the valley below.

Verse 3

Am
Your sister sees the future
G
Like your momma and yourself.
F
You've never learned to read or write
E
There's no books upon your shelf.
Am
And your pleasure know no limits
G
Your voice is like a meadow lark.
F
But your heart is like an ocean
E
Mysterious and dark.

Chorus

F E
One more cup of coffee for the road.
F E
One more cup of coffee for I go,
NC Am G F E
To the valley below.

Outro

Am G F E AM

*******************

Anyway, hope this works for you. I found it to be not too hard and gave me some confidence in my barre chords.

Nicely done. I'll have to give it a try sometime. I'm not really familiar with the song.

Have been working a little bit on this one lately as my brother and I will perform it saturday. Have been trying to come up with a bass part, here is an attempt at an intro (somehow I've always played it in dm - you can put everything one string lower if you like to keep it in A ) -

sheet music written in paint :?

[/img]

And here is a tab for the bass intro and a groove for the verse

Intro

dm C Bb A

----12-14---11h12--10-|-9---10-12--10-9-|-----9-10--9----|--------|-
----------------------|-----------------|-12----------12-|---11---|-
----------------------|-----------------|----------------|--------|-
----------------------|-----------------|----------------|--------|-

dm

--------10-12-10--|-9--------------
----12------------|---12-11-12-----
------------------|------------12--
------------------|----------------

Bass progression verse:

dm C Bb
q.e q q q. e q q q. e q e e
---7-7---|------5---|----3-3---3---
---------|----5---5-|--------3-----
-5-----5-|-3--------|-1------------
---------|----------|--------------

A (small bass riff:)

w (let ring) e e q
----------------4-5-6--||
----------------------.||
--0-------------------.||
-----------------------||

Hope this makes sense!
Disclaimer - I've never been a bassplayer

Iraesq...
ThankX for the post :D

I've always loved this song.
I'm HUGE on Dylan, and this would be in my top favorite albums list (Desire), except that the 2nd side seems to be....
'unfinished' to me.
At least compared to the first side (yes, I'm talking about 'vinyl' ), on which EVERY track is outstanding.

Like the White Stripes version too.

I usually play this in all open chords myself, and instead of 'E', I use an Em chord.

Lars -

Love to add bass lines to my stuff.
ThankX for putting that up.
Haven't had time to try it yet, I will though.

Thankx again.

Hmmm....

I tried playing it with the E chord, and it sounds good that way.

Then when I tried it right after with the Em chord instead, it seemed to be lacking something.

Then I kept going with the Em til it sounded 'right' again.
Then swiching to the E sounded 'off'.

Though using the Em the first time and the E the second time it came up in the song sounded kinda okay.

I'm now wondering if Dylan alternates between the two as he does similarly in 'Knockin' On Heavens Door'....? (Am7/C)

Any theory experts with a great ear.... explinations welcome :D

I'm not sure how Dylan plays it, but I would definitely go with E major here. The G# in the E major chord is the leading tone of the A harmonic (or melodic) minor scale. It leads back to Am. The gypsy feel of this song is definitely consistent with the melodic or harmonic minor rather than the natural. The violin part also often trills on that G # at the end of the progression, so I'm pretty sure it's E major. The i VII VI V progression is pretty ubiquitous, and one of my favorites. It's used in "So Happy Together," "Little Diane" (a fantastic song by Dion of "Runaround Sue" fame), and as a cadence of sorts in flamenco music. I didn't know this song used it until just now, though. Real horrorshow.

ThankX for the replies guys.

And I did a bit of digging myself.
I actually found, and then went through my old collection of tabbed out songs.
It took awhile,
though I did find One More Cup in there.

I had it written out with an E chord.

I wonder how I 'degenerated' it to an Em chord over the years...?

Strange.... :?

Still, it sounds 'good' to me with the Em, and I wonder why.
I don't have the song here, so I can't play to it.
Oh well.

You'll also find that Am/G/F/E riff in the verses of "Runaway" by Del Shannon. That's in here somewhere as well.

Runaway! That's what I was trying to remember. What a fantastic song. That synth solo has got to be my favorite instrumental break that doesn't feature the guitar. Did you know the original take was sped up by a factor of 1.2 or so? That accounts for the unreal sound of the falsetto on "wa-wa-wa-wa-wonder" and some of the brightness of that synthesizer. A member of Del's band essentially built that thing himself, called the Musitron.

Runaway - Love that song!!!!

I have NEVER been able to come close to singing that song :D

I hope that 'sped up' take is the reason behind it.

'Unreal' is a great way to describe Del's singing in it. 8)

Lovely stuff. Just started learning Barre chords. Lovely song. At the risk of sounding blasphemous let me confess i hadn't listened to this song before  Very nice. Will try singing along once i'm comfortable with the chord changes.

As easy as this song is to play (especially if you play open chords), I have found it nearly impossible to sing. Bob Dylan does this gypsy trill thing that really makes the song that just sounds like my voice is cracking when I try. Best of luck with it, though.
