The F, Fsus and the Csus are the true chords if played without a capo and you want to play it in the same key as the original recording. The chord shapes shown in the Tom Petty Guitar Book for his Greatest Hits are not the easiest to play.

Using the capo and the easier shapes of D, Dsus4, Dsus 2 & Asus2 are far more easier. What I'd like to see is his video of the song to see if he's using a capo or not. I guess I better tune into VH1 Classic!

E doesn't = MC2, E = Fb

Very easy song, love it, thanks! I don't play it with a capo, but regular on the 2nd/3rd fret, all down strokes, but I've been playing it with a light, up stroke with nothing fretted between the Dsus and D, and the Asus and D. You can add some more open string up strokes if you'd like and it gives it a nice "folksy" sound.
