I came across this on the web somewhere and found it really easy to pick up. That's mainly because the pace is so leisurely, approx 60-70bpm. If you're lucky enough to get the recording I have you'll hear Tom count the beat out before he begins playing. The only tricky part is the five-string F chord and the F/G shape, but if I can do it pretty much anyone could!

The chords needed are:
C F F/G G1 G2
E - 0 - 1 - 1 - 3 - 3
B - 1 - 1 - 1 - 0 - 3
G - 0 - 2 - 2 - 0 - 4
D - 2 - 3 - 3 - 0 - 5
A - 3 - 3 - x - 2 - 5
E - x - x - 3 - 3 - x

The picking pattern through most of the song goes like this:
C F F/G
| 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & | 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & |
E | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |
B | - - - - 1 - - - - - - - 1 - - | - - - - 1 - - - - - - - 1 - - |
G | - - - - 0 - - - - - - - 2 - - | - - - - 2 - - - - - - - 2 - - |
D | - - 2 - - - 2 - - - 3 - - - 3 | - - 3 - - - 3 - - - 3 - - - 3 |
A | 3 - - - - - - - 3 - - - - - - | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |
E | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | 3 - - - - - - - 3 - - - - - - |

First verse looks like this:
(Note that where I've annotated like this C:F it means a 1/2-bar of each. Where I've written C(1/2) it means the same thing ... I'm not deliberately trying to confuse you - I'm confused too!)

Intro:
C:F | F/G | F/G | C:F | F/G | F/G

Verse:
C(1/2) F(1/2) F/G F/G
I hope that I don't fall in love with you

C(1/2) F(1/2) F/G F/G
‘cos falling in love just makes me blue

F(1/2) C(1/2) G1(1/2) C(1/2)
The music plays and you display your heart for me to see

F(1/2) C(1/2) F(1/2) F/G(1/2) F/G
I had a beer and now I hear you callin' out to me

Chorus consists of three bars and looks like this:
C F G2 C
| 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & | 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & |
E | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |
B | - - - - 1 - - - 1 - - - 3 - - | - - - - 0H1 - - - - - - - - - |
G | - - - - 0 - - - 2 - - - 4 - - | - - - - 2 - 3 - 2 – 0 - - - 2 |
D | - - 2 - - - 2 - - - 3 - - - 5 | - - 2 - - - - - - - - - 3 - - |
A | 3 - - - - - - - 3 - - - 5 - - | 3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |
E | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |

I hope that I Fall in love you
Don't with

C
| 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & |
E | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |
B | 1 - - - 0 - - - 1 - - - 3 - - |
G | 0 - - - 0 - - - 0 - - - 0 - - |
D | - - 2 - - - 2 - - - 2 - - - 2 |
A | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |
E | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |

If you want to spice up the intro (and the guitar neck is thumb-fretting friendly!) you can use the following as the first two bars of the intro:
C F F/G
| 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & | 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & |
E | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |
B | - - - - 1 - - - - - 1 - - - - | - - - - 1 - - - - - - - 1 - - |
G | - - - - 0 - - - - - 2 - - - - | - - - - 2 - - - - - - - 2 - - |
D | - - 2 - - - 2 - - - - - 3 - - | - - 3 - - - 3 - - - 3 - - - 3 |
A | 3 - - - - - - - 3 - - - - - - | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |
E | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 1 | 3 - - - - - - - 3 - - - - - - |

I use my thumb for the F on the low E string - but if you're a barre'd F kind of person you won't have to!

Rest of the verses are:

Now the room is crowded, people everywhere
And I wonder should I offer you a chair
Well if you sit down with this old clown,
he'll take that frown and break it
Before the evening's gone away, I think that we could make it
And I hope that I don't fall in love with you

Now the night does funny things inside a man
These old tomcat feelings you don't understand
I turn around and look at you, you light a cigarette
Wish I had the guts to bum one, but we've never met
And I hope that I don't fall in love with you

And I can see that you are lonesome just like me
And I'm feeling like you'd like some company
Well I turn around to look at you, and you look back at me
The guy you're with is up and split, the chair next to you's free
And I hope that you don't fall in love with me

Now it's closing time, the music's fading out
Last call for drinks I'll have another stout
I turn around and look at you, you're nowhere to be found
I search the place for your lost face, I guess I'll have another round
and I think that I just fell in love with you

I finish the last chorus (after the F - G2 slide) by slowly strumming across the a-d-g-b strings in a C-shape. Sometimes I'll hammer on from the B to the C on the B-string as a final flourish - quite pathetic really, but we all have to pretend we're guitar-gods!

I hope you enjoy it - any suggestions for improvement are welcome - I'm new at this and could have some bits way off.

Cheers,

David
