I have been exploring alternate tunings such as DADGAD and Open G, and found that they are not as hard as I thought they'd be, and that alot of good songs can be easily played in alternate tunings. This one, Led Zeppelin's "That's The Way", is a very pretty song, and quite easy to play once you learn the progressions. This is the 1st one I've done for the Easy Songs forum. Hope you like it. :D

Led Zeppelin – That's The Way
(Page, Plant)

“OPEN G” Tuning: DGDGBD
* To get to "Open G" tuning from standard tuning, (EADGBE), plug into a chromatic tuner and tune your 6th string to D, 5th string to G, and 1st string to D. Your 4th, 3rd, & 2nd strings stay the same.
If you don't have a tuner:
* Tune your sixth string down a whole step, (2 frets); to D. Check the tuning with the fourth (D) string.
* Tune your fifth string down a whole step to G. Check the tuning with the third (G) string.
* Tune your first string down a whole step to D. Check the tuning with the fourth (D) string.

Hold this pattern & lift your index finger off for 4004 chord, then place the index finger back down for the 4304 chord, slide the pattern back down to the 1st fret, and so on.

Fingering: Index finger 2nd string 1st fret, middle finger 3rd string 2nd fret, ring finger 4th string 3rd fret, pinky finger 1st string 3rd fret. I usually can't get my pink down right away on the 1st beat, but can get it by the 2nd beat, and it sounds ok. Then switch to: Index 2nd string 1st fret, (it was already there), middle 4th string 2nd fret.

(Riff #3 is basically the same as riff #2, accept that you extend the 4th measure out more, (the 4320 – “D” chord I think), and then you end on an open “G” chord.)

Fingering same as when we played this chord before. Listen to the rhythm to get the timing.

Intro: Riff #1 2x's

Verse: Riff #1
I don't know how I'm going to tell you
I can't play with you no more
I don't know how I'm going to do what mama told me
My friend the boy next door

I can't believe what people saying
You gonna let your hair hang down

You're in the darkest side of town

And when I'm out I see you walking
Why don't your eyes see me?
Could it be you've found another game to play?
What did mama say to me?

Chorus #1: Riff #2
That's the way, oh that's the way it ought to be
Mama said that's the way it ought to stay

Riff #1

And yesterday I saw you standing by the river
And weren't those tears that filled your eyes
And all the fish that lay in dirty water dying
Had they got you hypnotized

Riff #1 4x's

Verse: Riff #1
And yesterday I saw you kissing tiny flowers
But all that lives is born to die
And so I say to you that nothing really matters
And all you do is stand and cry

Riff #1 4x's

I don't know what to say about it
When all your ears have turned away
But now's the time to look and look again at what you see
Is that the way it ought to stay

Chorus #2: Riff #3
That's the way, that's the way it ought to be whoa don't you know now
Mama said, mama said that's the way it's going to stay yeah
Ahh Ahh Aaaaaah Ahh Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh

Riff #4 4x's

On the live versions of this song, I think Jimmy throws in a “C” chord by barring the 5th fret 1st, 2nd & 3rd strings. They also end on an open “G” chord.

On Led Zeppelin 3, there are some nice slide riffs that Jimmy plays too, but I haven't figured those out yet.

"The only way I know that guarantees no mistakes is not to play and that's simply not an option". David Hodge
