Well here it it is, the greatest pub sing along song. Makes the hairs stand up the back of my neck when I hear it. Takes me right back to 1971 what a number one! (See my and Vic Lewis's comments on my `You Wear It Well' post on this forum last year)

I can play most of this pretty well except for the F#m chord wich being a barr I tend to deaden and its so easy to get to by sliding from the Em that preceeds it. Any body know a different chord I could use instead?

The Asus4 sounds brilliant and is easy too. One tip, I add my pinky on the B string third fret when playing the G chord on this. It just sounds better on this song.

As for strumming pattern:
Well if your my age you just feel it. But if not just listen to the song on your music system. It will come.

I'm sure someone out there can give more help on the strumming this.

On the intro, middle eight and outro fills:

D/// is my way of showing four beats and D/ two beats to the bar. Hope it all makes sense.

Anyway here goes

Intro:

D/// Em7/// G/// D/ G/

D/// Em7/// G/// D/ G/

Verse 1:

(A) Wake up Maggie, I (G) think I got something to (D) say to you,

It's (A) late September and I (G) really should be (D) back at school.

I (G) know I keep you am(D)used

But I (G) feel I'm being (A) used,

Oh,(Em) Maggie, I could't have (F#m) tried any (Em) more.

(Asus4) You (Em) lured me away from (A) home,

Just to (Em) save you from being (A) alone,

You (Em) stole my heart and th(A)at's what really (D) hurts.

Verse 2:

The (A) morning sun when it's (G) in your face really (D) shows your age,

But (A) that don't worry me no(G)ne in my eyes you're ev(D)erything.

I (G) laughed at all of your (D) jokes,

My lo(G)ve you didn't need to co(A)ax,

Oh,(Em) Maggie, I could't have (F#m) tried any (Em) more.

(Asus4) You (Em) lured me away from (A) home,

Just to (Em) save you from being (A) alone,

You (Em) stole my soul and that's a (A) pain I can (G) do with(D)out.

Verse 3:

(A) All I needed was a (G) friend to lend a (D) guiding hand,

But you (A) turned into a lover and, (G) mother, what a lover, you (D) wore me out.

(G) All you did was wreck my (D) bed

And in the (G) morning kick me in the (A) head,

Oh, (Em) Maggie, I couldn't have (F#m) tried any(Em)more.

(Asus4) You (Em) lured me away from (A) home,

Cause you (Em) didn't want to be (A) alone,

You (Em) stole my heart, I couldn't (A) leave you (G) if I (D) tried.

Middle Eight:

Em7/// A/// D/// G///

Em7/// A/// D/// G///

Verse 4:

(A) I suppose I could coll(G)ect my books and go (D) back to school,

Or (A) steal my Daddy's (G) cue and make a living out of (D) playing pool,

Or (G) find myself a rock and roll (D) band,

That (G) needs a helpin' (A) hand,

Oh, (Em) Maggie, I wish I'd (F#m) never seen your (Em) face.

(Asus4) You made a (Em) first class fool out of (A) me,

But I'm as (Em) blind as a fool can (A) be,

You (Em) stole my heart but Id've (A) loved you (G) any (D) way.

The Big Finish:
The whole pub should be be with you now or they've got no soul!
(anybody got a Mandolin?)

Em7/// A/// D/// G///

Em7/// G/// D/// D///

Em7/// A/// D/// G///

Em7/// G///

D/// Em7/// G/// D/// Play five times

Outro:

(D) Maggie I (Em7) wish I'd (G) never seen your (D) face,

D/// Em7/// G/// D///

I'll (D) get on back ho(Em7)me (G) one of these (D) days.

D/// Em7/// G/// D/// repeat and fade Oh Maggie Oh Maggie ad lib etc.

RIP John Peel

Cheers all

Chris

Great one.
In the first couple of verses you have Lured me away from (Em)home.
I have been playing an A there (seems to sound better to me)
Mind you I am playing from old memories as I don't have the recording.
For the F#m I am substituting something I learned a while back (might have been one of Davids lessons, don't remember)
F#m7
202222 Bar the first 4 strings with your index and catch the second fret of the low E with your thumb. (seems to sound ok here)

Thanks Missileman,

Your dead right there it should be a A not Em. I'll correct that straight away and the missing o on the word from.

Thanks also for the tip on using the thumb for F#m7, i'll have a try at substituting the F#m with it.

Glad you liked it.

Best regards,

Chris

When I get back from holiday...sitting soaking up the sun in Benidorm at the moment....I´ll tab the intro to to this for you, a nice acoustic-friendly intro......

And yes, I do have a guitar here with me....spent 72 quid on a hard case, almost as much as the bloody guitar cost....

And last night (Sunday Night) was real quiet, so guess who brought the guitar down to the bar and played lots of old Beatles, Stones and CCR songs....and guess who never had to pay for a drink all night....

And guess who had to be helped to bed.....

:D :D :D

Thanks Vic.

Just shows that even when your on holiday your thinking of us all, you're a true GN member.

Nice to hear you're entertaining the expats too and making them homesick.

Email forums are better than a postcards!

Cheers,

Some people dream of playing in a huge rock n roll band, making lots of money, getting all the chicks.... But you just lived my dream Vic.

Someday, i'll get there.

Dogsbody (Chris),

What a great tune! And you're right, the Asus4 is "brilliant". I've been listening to the live acoustic version from "Unplugged and Seated" and how about this?

Oh Maggie I couldn't have [F#m]tried, any more. [Asus4''' A''']

You lured me away from [A]home,

I'm playing the Asus4 and the A at this point without the A (5th) string, just strings 4 - 1.

I'm thinking the mandolin part might be able to be copied on guitar by playing those chords up high on the neck using just strings 1 - 3. Give me time, I'll try to figure it out and see if I can make it work. But it's songs like this that make me want to pick up a mandolin.

E doesn't = MC2, E = Fb

Hi crash1117 (and anyone else who's interested!).

The strumming pattern for Maggie May that I found in one of my books is D D DUDU. It sounds pretty good to me. You could also try D D DUD and it will sound okay. Hope this helps.

Bob

That almost sounded musical. Thanks Guitar Noise!

See if this helps for strumming... here's what I got for the intro:

INTRO: | D ''' Em7 ''' | G ''' D G | | D ''' Em7 ''' | G ''' D G' |

E doesn't = MC2, E = Fb

Music "Theory"? "It's not just a theory, it's the way it is!"

Hi Jonnyt,

Just tried your suggestion for the Asus4. Brilliant sounds great, and Missileman if your out there I tried your F#m7 too. No dead strings. Things are getting good!

This is what GN is all about, give a little, share a little and together we all and gain a lot.

So thanks to all who have helped on this one so far.

Can't wait ffor Vic's intro tabs.

Chris.

This is as close as I could get to the mandolin part on the guitar for solo performance. Sounds pretty good. If one had a second guitar player and still no madolin, I bet one could even get closer to that sound with the use of a capo. Maybe I'll try to figure that out next. Anyway, here's what I got...
MANDOLIN ARRANGED FOR GUITAR

D = X X X 11 10 10 Em7 = X X X 12 12 12 G = X X X 12 12 15

E doesn't = MC2, E = Fb

Music "Theory"? "It's not just a theory, it's the way it is!"
