Hi all - I've been learning some stuff from this site for about a month now and am awed by the quality of the posts and the participation in the forum. This is my first post.

I'm trying to learn a song from a tab picked up on the internet, and it doesn't sound quite right to me. Is anyone familiar with this tune that might have recommendations? Specifically, it's the Bm7 that sounds out of place. I'm playing it barred on the second fret.

Some of the voicings of these 4 different structures sound okay, but I'm sure that somebody will be along to give more insights. Yes, I am quite familiar with the song, love it ... having heard it, and will go try.

I'm back, and not a real musician BTW, no GUITAR training, self taught and it's been a hobby. :roll:

The second version only works with a capo, and there are WHAT!!! ....... like 3 modulations, OMG. :shock:

That version works starting with the capo on F#, then to G, till it goes 1 step further to G#, and moves further up to A.

Here's the background that I played with, between posts. You just can't move your capo mid-song; need more chords. :lol:

There are, of course, all sorts of ways to voice a chord. What you might be thinking about is why it sounds out of place. If you're trying to pick the melody line out of the chord, your choice of Bm7 won't be helpful because the melody hands around the B note (of the open B string) and the only B you've got is buried in the bass (second fret of the A string).

Two possible solutions:

1) Play Bm7 as an open position chord (x20202). This gives you a B that matches the melody note and might make it sound better to your ears. You could also stress that B note by not playing either E string (x2020x). Both of these voicings work particularly well with the open position Amaj7 (x02120).

2) Play the "E shaped" Bm7 barre chord (797777) which makes that B note really stand out. Trouble with this is that you then kind of drop into a whole different sound switching from this chord to the open position Amaj7. You can fix this easily by using a very cool (and easy) fingering of Amaj7 (x07999).
