With powertab you can create the tab and then export it into ASCII.  It works quite well.  We could just have everything in ASCII and make them with Powertab and then export to ASCII...

The Power Tab Editor is one of the greatest guitar tools available, indeed ( http://www.power-tab.net/ for those who are not aware of this great free tool), but the idea of the ESD (as far as I understood) is not to publish tabs, but merely chord sheets (lyrics and chords and rhythm patterns). Readers of Guitar World Acoustic may be familiar with the distinction into the Tablature and the EZ-Transcriptions. While Power Tab does the tab part the proposed text file takes care of the EZ-transcriptions.

Mark,

I have to concur on the use of .txt  I recently switched from AOL for many reasons, but mainly due to the complexity of the 9.0 program.  Txt is very basic, uncomplicated, doesn't require megas of memory and gigas of speed.

How bout describing a note as such:  1st string open or 3rd string, 1st fret, 4th string 2nd fret, 5th string 2nd fret, etc.?  Abbreviated as 1-O, or 3-1,4-2,5-2?  Anyone else find TAB to be difficult to learn as it is visual compared to descriptive?

In Latin America, they often use the 1-0, 2-1 system.  I find it about 10 times more difficult and less useful than tab and I find tab about 10 less useful (and even a little more difficult for me) than standard notation.

We are focusing on the chord/lyrics stuff... so any tab was placed there because the person presenting the material wanted to include it.

Challenges abound on the internet.  The point of this database was to have strumming songs for beginners to practice chord changes, strumming patterns while building their repertoire with some easy but cool songs.

Trying to keep and limited scope and not get distracted by lack of focus.  Look up "scope creep" to get an idea of what we would like to avoid.

avoiding lack of focus is a worthwhile pursuit... if you have a camera...

Keep up the great administrative work!

Guitar Noise and the GN forums are definitive proof-positive that you can get much, much more than you pay for!  ALL the mods and admins do a fantastic job, and the lessons, advice, and help are the best I've seen online, in the stores, in a box, with a fox, on a train,... um.. sorry.  They're just the best.

Mark-- I don't know if folks tell you this very often, but I love the Easy song DB.  As a beginner, it's a huge help to have access to songs that aren't hokey.

Another Seuss fan!  Cool.  I am 36 and still read and watch the Grinch every single December.

Thanks for the compliments.  I try to get a few songs in every weekend to keep the DB growing, because I realize to be really useful it has to have a certain inventory (I think there is a breakpoint somewhere above 100 but below 1000 where a database seems "well stocked"; it'll take a while, but we will get there.

I need to sit down and write an interface for submissions via the web so I can anoint a couple other people to help out.
