This is a terrific little song by the late
Bob Marley and not at all reggae-fied

really nice intro to this one also

INTRO PLAY TWICE
e-----------------------------------
B-----------------------------------
G-----------------------------------
D------------2-0---------0----------
A----0h2---3-----2---0h2---3p2-0----
E--3-----3---------3-------------3--

VERSE

(G)Old pirates,yes,they (Em7)rob I

Sold (G) I to the (G/B)merchant ships (Am)

(G)minutes after they took (Em)I

(C) from the (G/B)bottomless (AM) pit

But my (G) hand was made (Em7) strong

(C)by the hand (G/B) of the almighty.(Am)

We (G) forward in this gen(Em)eration (C) triumphantly(D)

CHORUS

(G )Won't you help to sing (C)these (D) songs of (G) freedom

Cause (C) all I (D) ever had, (Em) (C) redem(D)ption (G) songs

(C)redem(D)ption (G)songs

VERSE 2

(D)Emanci(G)pate yourselves from mental (Em7) slavery

None but (C) ourselves can (G/B)free our minds (Am)

Have no (G) fear for atomic energy (Em)

Cause none of (C) them can (G/B) stop the time (Am)

How (G) long shall they kill our (Em7) prophets

While we (C) stand a(G/B)side and look? (Am)

Yes, some say (G) its just a (Em) part of it

We've (C) got to fulfil the (D) book.

REPEAT CHORUS

THEN PLAY
Em,C,D.x4

The rest is just a repeat of
of what has preceeded

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our mind.
Wo! Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fullfil the book.
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever had:
Redemption songs -
All I ever had:
Redemption songs:
These songs of freedom,
Songs of freedom.

A true classic. I always played the lead-in to the chorus as:

We (G) forward in this gen(Em)eration (C) triumphantly(D)

CHORUS

Won't you help to (G)sing (C)these (D) songs of (G) freedom...

as opposed to your posted:

We (G) forward in this gen(Em)eration (C) triumphantly(D)

CHORUS

(G )Won't you help to sing (C)these (D) songs of (G) freedom

Hold that (D) until the word sing. I'll have to give this a try tonight. Thanks.

Thanks Rodders for this excellent guitar song.

There was a discussion here about this song awhile ago. Info on strumming etc:

I have to agree with csmart there. Hold the D chord until "sing". And I play the chorus in a slightly different way. I change to (D) on "these".

Chorus:
D G
Won't you help to sing
C D G
These songs of freedom??

Thanks for that csmart01 I think they both work well so I may work the one on chorus 1 and the other on chorus 2 just to get some variation

And thanks for the info on the other thread Elvis. The song seems to be quite popular with other artists, so who knows it may get a re-release in the future. Lets hope so anyway

Nice one Rodders....

Quick question....how are you playing the Em7? just the one finger on the fifth string, 2nd fret, or like an Em chord with the C# added on the 2nd string?

:D :D :D

Thats right Vic (Em and the C# on the second) Thats how I always play it, so long as I can get to it quick enough, which is OK on a song like this when you don't need to much speed.

I feel it sounds brighter played that way

Yes you can play it using those chord shapes. These are the shapes I would use all though I always prefer to use this one for the G/B G/B x20033 and for the Em7 see the previous posts by myself and Vic

You wil find with the extra fingering, the chords sound much brighter and give the whole song a lift.

Welcome to guitarnoise by the way and thanks for the input

Oh and here is another sound byte> this time by the "Chieftens"

good song

i usually throw a guitar break in there
Em chord up at the seventh fret
back to open C chord
to open D chord

do this a couple times

you can get a little raggae feel with the barred Em chord

not much but it helps
you can here it done in most recordings

I worked on this for a couple of hours yesterday (much to my wife's chagrin - "Are you going to play that AGAIN!?" ) and am about to dive into the Guitar Pro version of it to learn it a little more thoroughly. I don't know if I'd have tried to pick this one up if it hadn't been posted here - thanks a bunch, it's a great song! :)
