THEN PLAY
Em,C,D.x4

On this part I like to play the Em and then quickly mute it by taking my fingers off the fretboard a couple of times kid of a shuffle feel, then strum the C twice, and finally strum the D 3 times. I'll post a sound file later today.

Sorry the host I use just changed their policy no mp3s so I've been looking into other places to host my sound files. Plus I've got a major remodel going on at my house(Argh it's drinin' me nuts) and to keep the cost down I've been doing the finish work myself I haven't actually played my guitar for SOB! 10 days. Oh well life goes on I promise I will post asap!

Joe Strummer version of "The Redemption Song"

Tuning: Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, eb
Intro: B, E, F#
B G#m7
Old Pirates, yes, they rob I.
E C#m
Sold I to the merchant ships
B G#m E F#
minutes after they took I from the bottomless pit.
B G#m7
But my hand was made strong
E C#m
By the hand of the Almighty.
B G#m E F#
We forward in this generation triumphantly.

Chorus
B E F# B
Won't you help to sing these songs of freedom?
E F# G#m E F# B
'Cause all I ever had, redemption songs,
E F# B E
redemption songs.
F# B G#m7
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery,
E C#m
None but ourselves can free our minds.
B G#m
Have no fear for atomic energy,
E F#
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
B G#m7
How long shall they kill our prophets
E C#m
While we stand aside and look?
B G#m
Yes, some say it's just a part of it.
E F#
We've got to fulfill the book.

That was the chord structure I had been working from until Rodders postsed the Bob Marley one

I tried it a ouple of times and i guess it only muted eight notes downstrums, it seems to work with a muted d/du/udu pattern

Hey Rodders,

Thanks for this... I've never really been a reggae fan. But obviously some of Marley's songs are classic such as this one. Never thought to try and play any songs of his, until I just saw Chris Cornell do an acoustic version of this. Very powerful and Chris talks about how he came to play this song.

You can view his version of the song here: http://www.strippedmusic.com/arch_audioslave.html

I found this terrific acoustic version by Bob Marley on youtube.

A very cool strumming pattern, which I'm having trouble picking up. Any suggestions?

Thats right Vic (Em and the C# on the second) Thats how I always play it, so long as I can get to it quick enough, which is OK on a song like this when you don't need to much speed.

I feel it sounds brighter played that way

So Em7 looks like: 022020?
