My girlfriend used to sing "The Circle Song" around the fire at camp when she was young. Not being a Joni Mitchell fan, I don't think I've ever heard it. Does anyone know the song? Anybody have the tabs??? Thanks!
Y[G]esterday a c[C]hild came out to w[G]onder, Caught a dragonf[C]ly inside a j[D7]ar.
Fe[G]arful when the s[C]ky is full of th[Bm]under, And te[C]arful at the fa[G]lling [Am7]of a st[G]ar.[C] [G] {c:Chorus:} [G]And the seasons, they go '[Am7]round and 'r[G]ound, And the painted ponies go [Am7]up and d[G]own. [C]We're captive on the carousel of t[G]ime. [C]We can't return, we can only look be[Bm]hind From where we c[C]ame, And go 'r[G]ound and 'round and 'r[Am7]ound in the circle g[G]ame.[C] [G]
Then the child moved ten times round the seasons, Skated over ten clear frozen streams. Words like "when you're older" must appease him, And promises of someday make his dreams. {c:Chorus.} Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now, Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town. And they tell him, "Take your time, it won't be long now, 'Till you drag your feet to slow the circle down."
{c:Chorus.}
So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty, Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true. There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams, and plenty. Before the last revolving year is through.
{c:Chorus.}
This is just chefie's post, re-formatted. Hopefully it'll be easier to read. This is one of my all-time favorites. In fact, it's one of my funeral songs. Thanks for posting it, chefie!
[G] [C] [G]
Yesterday a child came out to wonder,
[C] [D7]
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar.
[G] [C] [Bm]
Fearful when the sky is full of thunder,
[C] [G] [Am7] [G] [C] [G]
And tearful at the falling of a star.
{c:Chorus:}
[G] [Am7] [G]
And the seasons, they go 'round and 'round,
[Am7] [G]
And the painted ponies go up and down.
[C] [G]
We're captives on the carousel of time.
[C] [Bm] [C]
We can't return, we can only look behind From where we came,
[G] [Am7] [G] [C] [G]
And go 'round and 'round and 'round in the circle game.
Then the child moved ten times round the seasons,
Skated over ten clear frozen streams.
Words like "when you're older" must appease him,
And promises of someday make his dreams.
{c:Chorus.}
Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now,
Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town.
And they tell him, "Take your time, it won't be long now,
'Till you drag your feet to slow the circle down."
{c:Chorus.}
So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty,
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true.
There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams, and plenty.
Before the last revolving year is through.
{c:Chorus.}

The format Scratch used is called Chordpro and that is what I use as well. For anyone that is interested, I downloaded a perl script called webchord.pl that I hooked into Apache. So if my family or friends hit my web page and click on a chordpro link, apache will format it nice and pretty for them. There are also Linux, OS X and Windows native programs to print the files in nice formats and allow easy editing, transposing, etc.

Chefie and Scratchmonkey, thanks for your help, Kathy will love it when I learn to play it...as long as I don't sing along :P !!!
I wonder what tuning she used. I believe she rarely played in standard tuning.
Probably "G"
