I'm looking for some songs that are relatively easy to play, and sound very good with only a steel string acoustic. Basically I want songs that sound good soley because of the guitar, with no need for singing. A lot of songs rely on a singer's voice for the backbone of the song and the guitar plays background. I want a list of songs where the guitar is the star, not the singer's voice.

Do you mean instrumentals, like Albatross, Apache, Rebel Rouser, et al?

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

I mean anything that sounds really good playing on a single guitar without singing.

Yes :!:

All the ones Greybeard listed are great.

Rebel Rouser by Duane Eddy is a good choice :) - easy to learn and sounds good with heavy reverb if using an electric guitar.

BS :D

Well Ive gone throught the same questions, but now I am learning to sing. It just adds so much to the guitar.

Anyway I find these songs stand well on there own

Dust in the wind
Blackbird
Losing my religion
The needle and the damage done
Pretty much all of the blues on Litttle Brother DVD
Yesterday
Norwegian wood

Some easier ones that do ok on their own.
Old Man
Mr Jones (very simple but i like the rhythym)
Wild World
Comfortably numb
Wish you were here
Whever you will go

Good luck - - Eventually you will want to sing though.

Cheers,

Max

you can look up the chords, Ill give you the first sequence

Am F Dm G

All other chords follow the pattern and the second G chord is always held for two measures.

so this is the pattern put some swing into it.

Am---------F-----------Dm-------G-------------Am--------F-------------
UD D DUDU UD DUDU UD DUDU UD DU UDUD D DUDU U UD DUD

G
U UD DUD DUDU UD And back to Am

bettween the last down on the F and the first up on the g there is no missed stroke.

Ill record it and email it to you if you want. Once you have the pattern the other sequences follow it as well. Don't worry about getting to the chord too quickly, hide the change in a short upstroke.

sorry about the first try

Cheers,

Max

Max,

Trying to understand your strumming pattern for Mr. jones. Are you saying to hit that first F with just a downstroke or did the spacing get messed up when you posted it?

In answer to the original question,
Anything fingerpicked.
I bought the Fingerpicking the Beatles book published by Hal Leanord and have had a great time playing the songs.
PlaneTalk has a good size library of lessons complete with video on his website:

Max,

That's it. You had me scared for a minute. I love this song and play it all the time.

MaxRumble makes some excellent suggestions.

Some others are:

Like a Hurricane - Neil Young (here on GN as an "intermediate" song but read the lesson as there is an easier way to play it, as with any song)

Hurt - Johnny Cash (lesson also here on GN)

You've Got to Hide your Love Away - Beatles

Rocky Racoon - Beatles

Free Falling - Tom Petty

Across the Universe - Beatles

Hope this helps. Of course, it's a matter of opinion on what sounds good w/o singing. :D

"The details of my life are quite inconsequential." - Dr. Evil
