Runaway Train – Soul Asylum

Basic strumming pattern: D D U U D U

Intro: C Em Am G C

Verse 1:
C
Call you up in the middle of the night
Em
Like a firefly without a light
Am
You were there like a blowtorch burnin'
G
I was a key that could use a little turnin'
C
So tired that I couldn't even sleep
Em
So many secrets I couldn't keep
Am
Promised myself I wouldn't weep
G
One more promise I couldn't keep
F G
It seems no one can help me now
C Am
I'm in too deep there's no way out
F Em G
This time I have really led myself astray

Chorus:
C
Runaway train never going back
Em
Wrong way on a one way track
Am
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
G
Somehow I'm neither here nor there

Single notes:
E |--------------------------|
B |--------------------------|
G |--------------------------|
D |---0---2---0--------------|
A |-----------------2---3----|
E |--------------------------|

Verse 2:
C
Can you help me remember how to smile
Em
Make it somehow all seem worthwhile
Am
How on earth did I get so jaded
G
Life's mysteries seem so faded
C
I can go where no one else can go
Em
I know what no one else knows
Am
Here I am just drowning in the rain
G
With a ticket for a runaway train
F G
And everything seems cut and dry
C Am
Day and night, Earth and sky
F Em G
Somehow I just don't believe it

Chorus:
C
Runaway train never going back
Em
Wrong way on a one way track
Am
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
G
Somehow I'm neither here nor there

Bridge:
C
Got a ticket for a runaway train
Em
Like a madman laughing at the rain

Am
Little out of touch little insane
G
It's just easier than dealing with the pain

Outro:
C
Runaway train never going back
Em
Wrong way on a one way track
Am
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
G
Somehow I'm neither here nor there
C
Runaway train never coming back
Em
Runaway train tearing up the track
Am
Runaway train burning in my veins
G
I'd runaway but it always seems the same.

Repeat C Em Am G and fade

This is truly a beginner song, well done I think It sounds just like the original.

Thanks for this, now I just need to get that hang of that F chord. That chord kills me. :D

Thanks. :) It sounds great on a 12-string too. You can use x03211 for Fmaj, but still learn the full barre for when you really do need it. The open A string is part of the Fmaj triad of F A C, so you are good to go with that version. You just lose the F from the 6th string.

I just realized after all this time I goofed. After the last chorus and before the bridge is the lead solo and over the chord progression C Em Am G F G C Am F Em G. The strum pattern changes in the middle to a shorter one, but off the top of my head I can't remember. I have to play it to get it. Listen to recording and it's pretty obvious. Sorry about that. :(

Cool song, Mino. Thanks for posting. Brings me to within at least the past 20 years, playlist-wise.

Twenty years? In the past few months I've downloaded a bunch of old songs from iTunes.

Angie Baby
Soul Makossa
The Israelites
Indiana Wants Me (but I can't go back there)
Which Way You Going Billy?
Me and You and a Dog Named Boo
Seasons in the Sun
Ball of Confusion (that's what the world is)

To name just a few. I feel like I just stepped out ...

If you've ever seen the video for Runaway Train, it has the faces and info about missing kids. Totally makes me teary-eyed. But I digress... one of the kids was found because of the video. And was sooo peed off for being sent back home to "hell". Apparently it was an abusive home the kid ran away from.

Nope, have not seen the video. I'll have to you tube it.

I have, though, heard many of those songs. I have been tempted at those infomercials with the bug number of AM Gold hits from the 70's. Still not bit yet.

I had those songs on 45s. I don't know what happened to them, but I'm trying to recapture my teen years. 8)

This is a lot of fun to play, thanks for posting it. Only problem is the tune is too catchy and is now stuck in my head.
