STAND BY ME - Ben E King

This is a pretty simple version that can be played along with the song and sounds reasonable.

Chords - (G) (Em) (C) (D) - all open

The strumming pattern I use is D/DU/UDU - I included a sample mp3 below. It is a little rough (crummy recording capability) but you will get the idea.
VERSE
(G) (G)
When the night has come
(Em) (Em)
And the land is dark
(C) (D) (G) (D)
And the moon is the only light we'll see
(G) (G) (Em) (Em)
No I won't be afraid, no I won't be afraid
(C) (D) (G)
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

G G D D (strum each chord once hard whenever you hit this part of the song)
Oh darlin, darlin!

Then back to the same strumming pattern as the verse.

Enjoy

Thanks, cool song. Question:

After the first upstrum are you following that immediately with another or is there a “missed” downstrum in between?

Thanks

Yup, missed down strum between the two up strums which gives an ever so slight pause. And on the second up just try to catch the bottom 2 strings which gives it a nice ring.

Yes, this a nice and easy song. I think it was the second song I learned to play on the guitar.

Thanks for the effort Nils

Thanks for the effort

My pleasure. I enjoy this song. Shows my age I guess since I remember when it came out.

If you want to play along with Lennon's version of this, the chords are A F#m D and E....or you can use Nils' chords and put a capo on at the 2nd fret....

:D :D :D

nice post , I found the song in a beginner's book but it never really sounded that good with the strumming patern given. But one is much more fun and sounds more like it :)

Hey Nil's,

Fantastic song, but is that all there is too the lyrics?

Does it just repeat a few times?

Another campfire song for the family and I.

Thanks, Kenny

No there is is more lyrics. I just included enough to run through the chord progression. Here is the rest.

Darling Darling Stand By Me
Oh Now Stand by me
Stand by me
Stand by me

If the Sky that we look upon should tumble and fall
and the mountains should crumble to the sea

I won't cry I won't cry No I..I won't shed a tear
ust as long as you stand by me stand by me

Darling Darling Stand By Me
Oh Stand by me
Stand by me
Stand by me

Whenever your in trouble won't you stand by me
Oh now now stand by me oh stand by me stand by me

Darling Darling Stand By Me
Oh Stand by me
Stand by me
Stand by me

Oh yes, that's the rest of the song. I was playing it last night at work and just humming out the words and I couldn't remember if that was all too it.

I remember Lennon's version from Rock and Roll, but since it's a record LP, I haven't been able to play it. I can't hook up my turntable to my new reciever (no inputs for turntable).

Thanks for the rest of the song. Kenny

A truly great song, Nils Thanks for the strumming info.

I love John Lennon's version of this song as I am a far bigger fan of his than Ben E King.

Vic would you agree with the following tab as being the little fill put in after the main chord intro, just before the vocals start ? Sounds right to me

e------------------------
B------------------------
G------------------------
D------------------------
A-----------7-7--7h9p7---
E---7---9----------------

Or am I way off

Be excellent to each other & party on dudes!

Hey guys,

This is a good follow on lesson from "Mimielam's" thread for this song on page 5 of the ESD. keep it going!! thanks Nils and nice strumming sample too.

I agree Rodders with you about John Lennon's version, probably the best song from his Rock & Roll album. I've been having a go at your little tab intro Rod. Gotta learn proper tab sometime. I can get the hammer-ons but not quite there with the pull-offs yet.

I've also found that as you strum the chords add some palm muting it gives a nice authentic sound to.

I tried the capo too Vic, real good mate.

Chris

The guitar is all right John but you'll never make a living out of it! (John Lennon's Aunt Mimi)

Thanks Chris.. I also like the John Lennon version but I posted this one because I thought it was easier to make it sound like the Ben E King one. I play them both and do throw in a lot extra with the JL version

I was wondering if anyone had noticed the strumming sample. I am just curious if everyone thought it is worth doing when the poster of a song has time to record something and put it us with the tab. I just thought it would be a good reference on the strumming pattern.

Yes I agree with posting sound sample's with the song. I don't know if you know, but I did the same thing with "Octopuses Garden" a few weeks ago.

It helps the explanation of strumming patterns. So much better if you can hear what the poster is talking about.
