i meant to play the bass note of the chord twice. i.e for the D chord play twice the open D string and then play d du on the full D chord

Check out Justin Sandercoe's lesson, its what I used and got the song down nicely, shows what notes of the chord to use and such

I found out about the Caad9 months after I wrote this post. Should have updated it I suppose.
