Hey guys,

Looking for some recommendations on noise gates. I'm currently thinking of getting a boss NS-2 pedal. I play through humbuckers, a wah, and a high gain distortion pedal (Boss Metal Zone Mt-2).

In rack format, Rocktron Hush.

In pedal format, Boss NS2 or ISP Decimator.

Since I have two pedals that are pretty noisy, the noise gate should go at the end of the chain right?

If I recall correctly, the gate would go after overdrive or distortion pedals, but effects such as delay, chorus and reverb might be better positioned after the gate.

Check out the design of the NS2; it has an "effects loop" of sorts, so you would run the guitar (or guitar and distortion pedals) into the gate's input, then run the other pedals in the loop, and finally out to the amp.

Thanks a lot for the help, I think I will go with the NS-2.

Jeff - I'm looking at a Noise gate myself, how did you like the NS-2?

All I'd say is: don't get a Boss Ns-2.

To me, it isn't great at doing its job. It's noisy and thus overall not a great pedal.

Having said this, I also have an Alesis compressor/limiter rack piece, which isn;t hugely expensive, but I would imagine is a better piece of equipment and whilst it's silent itself, cutting out hum from an amateur circuit is very hard without cutting notes off early or losing certain sounds.

Ultimately I play without anything like that, because I don't have too much hum. I can bare with a bit that I get when I'm not touching the strings...

The above is true, which is actually quite rare of limiters/gates I think?
So that may be an advantage to your set up.

Usually overlooked, the MXR Smart Gate blew me away. it's a great gate. no tone sacrificed. a bit better in compared to the boss unit.
