Curious. Does anyone have any idea what they used for distortion?

I tried a little search. All I could find was that Nokie Edwards 'used a fuzz' on some tunes.
Found this site though - http://www.surfguitar101.com/index.php
I read reviews about the FuzzBrite fuzz pedal made by Ashbass. Apparently, the sound is very close to that of the Ventures. Check out the reviews here http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Effects/product/Ashbass/FUZZbrite/10/1 , the ratings are great and many people mention The Ventures.
Hope that helps!
the Ventures are the old days.
no computers that fit on a desk top.
maybe one or two effects boxes.
a tape machine for delay.
I grew up listening to them. a Fuzz box and reverb.
that's about it as far as I know.
they played Mosrites . interesting guitars. maybe that is a key part of their sound.
they played Mosrites..........
I have a Ventures CD with original vinyl "cover" - and they were kitted out with Fenders: Strat, Jazzmaster and Precision Bass.
Oh, and the title is "Forever Fender"!!
I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

you are correct. however, they did at one time have Mosrites.
waaay back in the sixties Semie Mosely met Nokie. Semie just finished designing the signature guitar for Standel amps.
he took a strat, laid it face down, and traced around it. he made 39 of those for Standel.
right after that he met Nokie and they got to talking.
The Ventures recorded at least 10 Dolton (Liberty) albums before covers showed Mosrites, and before the backs of album covers showed them endosing "Mosrite exclusively"....later in the '60's they "endosded" Award amplifiers...by...guess who..?
I have several of their first 10 vinyl albums, including their first one "Walk Don't Run" (1960) the cover of which shows a Precision Bass, a Strat AND a 335 Gibson with a honkin' big Bigsby on it...
My Liberty album "Bobby Vee Meets The Ventures" (1963*) shows the guys with 2 matching Jazzmasters and a Jazz bass....a gorgeous array of Fenderness !!!!
The first album that I know of (and have), had Mosrites featured and endorsed, was "Walk Don't Run '64".
*There is web info that the deal with Mosrite was reached in 1962, but as I say, the albums don't reflect it until 1964.
