No, he wasn't joking.

The golden ratio 1:1.618 really (really) is very important, both in nature and art. You see it everywhere, in the structure of plants and animals, in the growth of bacteria and probably in music too. It is also used by artist whenever they want something to look really good.

Google it for more info.

Greybeard wasn't joking either (I think) - his number is the ratio between any two successive tones... i.e.

A = 440
440 x 1.05946309436 = 466.16 = Bb

etc.

i read about PHI (fee) in Dan Brown's "The Davinci Code" and he mentions PHI, i just thought he made it up, i didnt know it actually existed.
