Yeah, it's the ultimate harmony guide, Alex. I've been referring to my copy for about 25 years now :)

wow, i mean i knew that you knew everything, and if you got it from that book, then i am glad i got it..

just a question about the release date..

some people said it was written in the 40's and ive seen "published" dates from 1970 and 1980.

just wondering when it WAS written?

Textbooks like that are written and successively updated and reprinted - the book usually has something like "originally published" or "Date of original publication". It could also be that the later publishing dates refer to different types of binding/cover or even printing process.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?Greybeard's PagesMy Articles & Reviews on GN

The first edition came out in 1941. My copy is a fourth edition, which I bought new in 1978. There's a fifth edition out now - it was revised again in 1987.

It is a great book, quite thorough. I picked up a copy on half.com for a dollar or two last year- Note: Half.com is a great site for digging up old theory books. They may arrive smelling a little ripe, but nothing a week or so in a box of baking soda wouldn't remedy.

Another book I'd eagerly recommend is Harmony and Voice Leading by Edward Aldwell and Carl Schachter. Likely covers the same material but I might go so far as to say it's even more detailed than W. Piston's book.

it was someone called DeVoto, his "workbook" that should accompany Piston's "Harmony"

so i have the aid.. but not the actual book, and there is 5 different versions

i do not know which one is the right one..

I'm not aware of Piston doing a workbook. The length is right - my fourth edition copy runs 594 pages in hardcover.

Piston didn't write the workbook. He did write Harmony, Counterpoint, and Orchestration. Harmony is widely used as a textbook.
