How I practice scales.

Instead of memorizing the fretboard patterns, I count. I know that in a major scale, all the intervals are major seconds, except for the ones between notes 3 and 4 and 7 and 8. I can start anywhere in the scale at any point on the fretboard and play a major scale. The problem with this method, as I see it, is that it's hard to skip notes in the scale. I can't easily go from 4 to 7. I suppose more practice will help with that though. Does anyone have any comments/criticisms/suggestions about this method?

Well if you know that moving down a string will move you from 1 to 4 and moving up a string is from 1 to 5 (exept on the G string) its easy to move around faster while counting. Also its helpful to learn the shapes and then kind of plug in the intervals so you already know where the whole scale is going to be.
