didn't mean to sound condescending, there's nothing wrong with playing cool rock music if thats what you wanna do. I was just meaning if you did wanna get into jazz or something like that, the best way to go about learning these things is to leave shapes and patterns behind, learn the names of the notes you are playing, and learn which notes go into what scales. That way you know when youre hitting a "wrong" one. Although truth be told there are no "wrong notes" in jazz. Just poor choices. If you play any note with enough conviction, and enough times, people will just think you know something they don't. And the best thing about jazz wankers is they will not only accept the note choice, but commend you for thinking outside the square and going to hip new places.
