Alright guys. Im a bit of a hopless case when it comes to music theory, as the only theory i know is the stuff about the pentatonic scale and a miniscule amount of time signatures. You see i have never had any form of music lesson in my life, but i am improving in guitar really quick. But my girlfriend is very musically advanced, she plays piano, flute and guitar, and is really boned up on her theory too. She wants me to start writing songs with her and i think i will need some theory knowledge to understand some of the things she talks about. Anyone point me where to start?
Thanks
David x

Your question is a little difficult to answer because it's a little too open and general. A forum like this is better for very specific questions.

That said, this site has a Theory section with numerous articles dealing with the basics of music theory in a user friendly manner.

I'd recommend starting with:

Theory Without Tears by David Hodge.
Basic Music Theory by Bruce Fleming.
The Power of Three by David Hodge.
Five To One by David Hodge.

These will lead you into other articles in the Theory section, but please feel free to ask questions if things are unclear.

I'll bet your girlfriend can teach you a lot.

She already has, and her dad is a retired music teacher so i could get a lot off him, the only problem with him is that he will have nothing to do with any music that isnt classical or jazz, but maybe for theory i could just pick his brains!

Never really realised how important theory was until i tried writing my own full song without a band!
