Opppsss... I think my age showed and realize most of you have never listened to Bruce Cockburn. Here are the lyrics to just one of his many beautiful and simple songs. Most all of his work is acoustic.
Dan
Small windows
Looking outward
Show me a sequined sky
Rubies shine in my glass of wine
Dusk breezes
On oiled water
Paint a pointillist facade
It's ceaselessly shifting world --
Like today I'm far away
I see your face behind each time-blurred pane
Strings vibrate
Music leaps out
In a shimmering intrigue
Words unsaid whirl away like dust
From the sidewalk-sweeper's broom
Across a fold in space you touch my hand
Have to agree with Scratchmonkey here
he nailed the best of all time
well for me anyway
:D :D :D
Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am
Bruce Cockburn, sure.... "If I had a rocket launcher"
two more...
An oldie
Neil Sedaka
and
Tom Waits
c'mon guys! what about the geniuses of rock? Maynard James Keenen & Billy Howerdel of A Perfect Circle, Corey Taylor & Joey Jordinson of Slipknot. I mean, c'mon. If you have ever listened to their lyrics, you would know what I am talking about.
Read the lyrics for Tool's Anemia. Billy howerdel wrote it and it is brilliant. Or read A Perfect Circle's The Outsider. It's a song about not committing suicide.
There's a thin fine line between hate and rage.
Now watch the line be crossed and break!
Bob Dylan
James Taylor
Jimmy Buffet
Shel Silverstein
Steve Goodman
If we're talking lyricists, then, Scratch, I can't believe you left out John Prine (she exclaimed unbelievingly) !!!!!! One of the best lyricists EVER (not to mention also your signature!!)! I also have to add John Hiatt and Joni Mitchell. IMHO!!!! :D And, I totally agree about Shel Silverstein. Right now I have Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show's "Sloppy Seconds" in the player.... 'Queen of the Silver Dollar' and 'Turn Off The World" and "Last Morning' and my personal favorite "Can't Touch The Sun"....... beautiful!!!!!

Crap! What was I thinking?! It was late. Lo Siento. You're right, John Prine is an amazing Lyricist, and I'd second Joni Mitchell. Sadly, I'm not familiar with John Hiatt. I'll have to look him up. If you'd care to recommend anything in particular by him, umm That'd be greeaat.
pierson bro, right on the money with them. I totally forgot about Maynard..altho he's more known for his crazy ass guitar playing. but yea, i agree.

I have quite a few favorites, Walk On, Perfectly Good Guitar, Slow Turning, Crossing Muddy Waters..... but my absolute favorite John Hiatt CD is "Little Head"........ Here's the lyrics.....
I'm dirty as a man hole cover
I'm lookin for my long lost lover
She turned me out and now I'm sinkin'
I'm just so easily led when the little head does the thinkin'
I'm talking with a tight red sweater
I'm feelin' like eddie vedder
Only twice as cool when she starts winkin'
I'm just so easily led when the little head does the thinkin'
I'm loyal as a dog but I'm a hog for that sexual attraction
It starts up in my mind and makes a bee line below the belt
No consequences just satisfaction
Baby in my heart I'm faithful
This two headed monster is so distasteful
Forgive me when my instincts start stinkin'
I'm just so easily led when the little head does the thinkin'
I'm just so easily led when the little head does the thinkin'
Think about it...
Forgive me if my instincts start stinkin'
I'm just so easily led when the little head does the thinkin'
And, my favorite song from "Little Head" is "My Sweet Girl"........
My sweet girl with you eyes so bright
Don't leave me in the dark tonight
The sun's turned down, the moon is low
And I know secrets you don't know
Do you hear the wind whispering
You're the one I love
The summer breeze tells the trees
I'm the one, because
You're my sweet girl
Hold me now in this sweet life
I will take you for my wife
We can walk the aisle in this city park
And I will offer you my heart
Married by a firefly
They're coming back, you know
And I'm the man who knows he can
Provide an afterglow
For you, my sweet girl
Cause you're my sweet girl
Do, do, do....
My sweet girl, do you know you are
My lovely dream, my little star
In a blanket made of earth and sky
Curled up with my sweetie pie
The love we make, it merely takes
Our breath out of the air
We kiss and then we breath again
The wind blows through your hair
It's whispering, you're my sweet girl
Can you hear it? it's saying, you're my sweet girl
You're my sweet girl
Do, do, do...
I see John Hiatt every time he comes to this area!!!!
