Jim Morrison, Carol King, Jimi Hendrix, Lindsey Buckingham (of Fleetwood Mac) Jackson Browne, Roger McGuinn all stand to mind for me. Lately I've found myself quite enjoying Sheryl Crowe's writing as well

I cannot believe no one has mentioned Jackson Browne yet! He has got be one of the most talented songwriters.
I would also put Sarah Mchaclan(which I can't spell either!) and Michelle Branch on my list.

i would not be here leaving a message in this forum if it were not for Jeff Buckley. I have only recently "discovered" him and his music, and together they truley are inspiring. In my eyes, no one has ever sung like him before. Of course his master trickery on guitar allowed for songs which came straight from his heart. By listening to his early stuff, especially the live in sine album, you can really feel his emotion pouring out.
Of course there are other great guitar players i admire.
Jimmy Page, for his love for music and ability to play, blues, rock, hard rock (heavy metal?), folk and Egyptian (used in Kashmir apparently)
Jimi Hendrix.
Chris Martin from Coldplay = first person to ever play piano as though it was a set of drums
" Ah man, that went down like a lead balloon."
hmmm. i love the lyrics of jimi hendrix . i enjoy even reading them. they're so amazing. i also like ani difranco's lyrics. she writes about real stuff thats going on. and she is amazing on the guitar.
now that i think about it, alot of female artists are great songwriters. jewel, tori amos, even courtney love. maybe thats just me though.
"i collect friends, i have about three." - ville valo

I think I am inp to go with the man to the left. People say he cant sing, people say he cant play the guitar. But I dont think it matter because no one can say he cant write a song

Bob Dylan, Love Minus Zero/No Limit,
Looks like everyone forgot Pink Floyd! To me they've always been mankind's greatest musicians ever! And though they're a band they sound like a single person. To spare other ppl a thought I think the next best thing that happened to humanity was Jim Morrison (his poetic genius is greatly reflected in the posthomous release The Ghost Song) and of course Bob Dylan too...
hum, looks like I forget to mention John Fogerty, Vic Lewis wont be happy
