"If you give a man a Les Paul guitar, he doesn't become Eric Clapton. If you give a man an amp and a synthesizer, he doesn't become whoever. He doesn't become us." - Roger Waters, Pink Floyd

Jesse Lacey (Brand New) or Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) for me. Both have influenced my songwriting immensely and both are amazing.

My favorite is Tom Waits. Definitely the wittiest songwriter.
Jimi Hendrix is probably the most underrated song writer I know of. Why is this? Well...everyone focuses on him as the greatest guitar player of all time, which is arguably true. But lets say he was a 'great' guitar player, his lyrics would be focused on much more so as amazing, extraordinary, beautiful. He was just getting better too. The man was a true artist.
John Lennon and/or Bob Dylan are the best though.
