Recently I joined a blues band (see sig) and we are looking to add a few originals to our set list. The problem is that none of us are songwriters. So if you have a blues song (either traditional I-IV-V or a variation like Stormy Monday), would you be willing to have us "cover" it at our gigs?

Words and chords are fine, though a rough recording would help us find the melody and tempo you intended.

Thanks!

Hey Dan,

I have one listed on here I wrote for an SSG assignment. Train Song It's pretty straightforward and I bet y'all could do something with it.

Alas, I don't have it on this computer and I can't get it off my old one. But I think Vic has a copy of one I wrote called Payday Blues. (Think you can get Dan a copy mate?) I had an upbeat jump blues tempo in mind for that but didn't have the skill I needed to play it. I'd be honored if you guys took it and used it.

Of course if you have any questions I'd be glad to answer them.

P.S> checking out the website. You guys sound good.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -- "WOW--What a Ride!"

Hmmm. I think I may have sent a copy to a friend. I'll check and see if she has it. If not I'm out of luck as my printed copy is about 1431 miles from here.

Hi Laz,

Vic made your request this week's assignment in the Sunday Songwriters Group, so here is what I submitted along with some other "blues-ish" songs you can have a listen to and use if they work for you.

James

Y8W25 No-Brainer Blues
http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9031780

The good Lord made you beautiful; you're a beauty beyond compare
The good Lord made you beautiful; you're a beauty beyond compare
You're so beautiful I can't help but stop and stare

How come you're so beautiful, so beautiful and so dumb?
How come you're so beautiful, so beautiful and so dumb?
Honey, you've got the looks of an angel but you ain't got no brains to speak of

She said, "I've got all the right curves to keep you satisfied
Yes, I've got all the right curves to keep you satisfied
The good Lord made me beautiful so you'd keep me as your wife"

She said, "I know I've got no brains, no common sense it's true
Yes, I know I've got no brains, no common sense it's true
The good Lord made me stupid so I'd stay with a man like you"

Good Times
http://soundclick.com/share?songid=1871006
Goodbye gloom
Goodbye rainy days
Good times have come
And they're here to stay

Yesterday I was feelin' blue
and as faded as my jeans
But good times have come
And they're here to stay

Good times have come
Seems they're here to stay

Oh my troubles
Use to be with me night and day
But they realized
Good times are here to stay

So now the only thing
My troubles can say
Is goodbye, my friend

Good times are here to stay

FAWM#4 Porch Light
http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8750300
Don't stare at that porch light, son
Just keep a walking
Yes, she's mighty pretty
All aglow this evening
But she's waiting to welcome
Welcome her lover home

Don't stare at that porch light, son
Just keep a walking
Cause you'll want to get closer
Yes, you'll want to get closer
See the bike on the front lawn
See the doll on the porch swing
Safe in her loving glow

Best drop the pretense of strolling the neighborhood
Best burn the films of your private Hollywood
Throw out those ragged velvet moth eaten thoughts
Don't stare at that porch light, move on

Don't stare at that porch light, son
Just keep a walking
Go and find yourself another
You can build a front porch for
Through the changing of the seasons
You can give her plenty reasons
To let her little light shine

Don't stare at that porch light, friend
Just keep a walking
Check the name on the mailbox
You live down and over two blocks
With a fence that needs a mending
You best be heading home
You best be heading home
You best be heading home

Y7Wk5 Rock 'n Rolls
http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7108677
Before my woman was my woman truth be told
I had a crazy craving for her cinnamon rolls
You aint gonna find it on a medical chart
But the appetites the shortest path to a mans heart
But I was as shy as a bee with no sting
To ever admit Id do anything for her cinnamon rolls

Well a tisket a tasket she filled her yellow basket
I couldnt resist so I finally asked it
My mouth was a watering my hunger exposed
She said Sorry your hungry but the kitchen is closed
My heart was left a hanging just a dingle-danga-ling
I said to myself Ill do anything for her cinnamon rolls

I was obsessed like that Yoggie Bear
I had to think quick no time to spare
Hey Boo-Boo dont you think you want to share
She said the park rangers watching you from over there
Yoggie get a clue you cant jimmy the lock
Remember the key is in the shape of a rock to get my cinnamon rolls

I got a rock rock rock to get my roll roll rolls
I got a rock rock rock to get my roll roll rolls
I got that rock got that diamond ring
I have to admit Id do anything for her cinnamon rolls

3 kids and 10 years down the line
My womans home cookin keeps me feelin fine
Ive had to add a notch or two to my belt line
But the rolls keep a comin and the rock still shines
I wouldnt want to have it any other way
The rock and rolls are here to stay -Rock n Rolls

Shes got the rock rock rock I gots my roll roll rolls
Shes got the rock rock rock I gots my roll roll rolls
Rockin and Rollin and doing fine
Rockin and Rollin one day at a time -Rock n Rolls

Shes got the rock rock rock I gots my roll roll rolls
Shes got the rock rock rock I gots my roll roll rolls
Rockin and Rollin those blues away
The rock and rolls are here to stay -Rock n Rolls

Still love that old time rock and roll
That kind of lovin just soothes the soul
Aint nothing wrong with us growing old
Weve got each other and our rock and rolls

Y7Wk8 Christmas in Our Hearts
http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7168095

We can have a tree and snow
A Yule log, candles, and some mistletoe
Shiny tinsel and fancy cards
But thats not where Christmas starts

We can have candy canes
Sleigh bell rides and reindeer games
Frosty, elves and shopping carts
But Christmas wont be in our hearts

We cant get what we need from toys or works of art
Go back to the place where Christmas really starts

We can have pretty lights
Figgy pudding and snow ball fights
Gather round family and friends
But the wrapping paper ends up in the bin

We cant get what we need from holiday pastry carts
Go back to the place where Christmas really starts

Just take a J from Jingle Bells
Take an.... E from eggnog shells
Take an.....S from stockings hung straight
Take a.......U from unopened fruit cake
Take an.... S from Santa Claus
The reason for the season is Jesus because....

Hes got what we need to put Christmas in our hearts
God became a baby a birthdays where it starts- Happy Birthday, Jesus

No luck. I tapped my sister where my stuff is stored for the moment to see if she can't find my song folder and send me a copy of it.

You're welcome to any of my lyrics in the SSG if you want them. There's at least a couple of blues tunes in there.

I did a quick search and came up empty. If you could point me toward some of your lyrics. Recordings are even better!

Thanks!

http://forums.guitarnoise.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=44876&p=408654&hilit=scrybe#p408654 - heh...looks like I forgot to finish this one  will try to get back onto it at some point. my bad...

will see if I can whip up some audio on some of these, so let me know if any in particular take your fancy. the problem with audio is it requires me to sing. on record.        (if your singer isn't comfortable with atonal scales and polytonality, I heartily suggest taking great liberties with any melodies I ever sing....)

Many thanks! I'm going to take a swing at GAS, but I think the others are a bit too highbrow for us. You've read a few more books than I.

St John is already on the docket for RSJ - what else are you thinking of bringing along?

uh.....there is no way in hell you're getting me to sing, like, on a stage, with people around, and cameras and stuff. No way. The stage and other people factors are more than sufficient to preclude that happening no matter how much red wine is on the table. Or tequila.

Was hoping to go a little jazzy-funky, esp with the horns section I've heard being touted 8)

Heh heh, I forgot about some of these tunes tho! Had to play through the Saint Are Sinners one a few times last night once I read it, love that tune. I recorded my voice today (v briefly) doing some conducting exercises (apparently if I can learn to conduct with my right hand it'll really help with transcribing stuff later on, makes it more efficient....being a lefty am learning to conduct with my spare hand, even tho it means doing the pattern backwards...). Weird. I mean, playback was weird. Boy, do I have a lot to learn about remembering to breathe and sing/speak into the mic (a bit difficult when waving one arm about, listening to a metronome, and having to turn your head sideways to read the next bar). But I surprised myself by not totally hating the sound of it. I actually quite liked the, um, bassyness of it a little. Lol, I didn't have to worry about pitching this time tho....

I'm gonna do a scratch track of my singing SAS today, just to see if I totally cringe to the point of making it crippling to work on. If not, I'll have a rough demo of that done within a week (v v v v busy trying to learn Latin grooves for a potential project, and doing various other things). When I do, I'll beep you.

Oh, and me tunes are generally deemed "perpetually in progress" so feel free to tweak wherever you deem appropriate.
