Hey, a few questions about Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes:
-How do you get the distortion effect on the chorus?
-Can it be played just as effectively with a breathing bassist instead of the bass track the band itself uses?
-Is it played with power chords? (pretty sure about that one but wanted to make sure)
-Can the bass riff be substituted on guitar?

I believe Musenfreund is correct. I think the bass sound comes from a guitar with an octave pedal.

jack uses an octave pedal, i'm tempted to say digitech whammy but i'm not sure. and it is in open A tuning, so it can be played with a slide or barred across i'm pretty sure thats right. also i think he uses a whole bunch of different octave pedals not from any certain company. and about the power chord question, bands like that almost alway use those 5ths as intervals and try to cover it up by making it a triad.

As people have already said, there is no bass guitar. So yeah, you can play it on guitar :D
Another cool thing about this song is Jack's use of slide durring the solo. He get's real good screeching vocal sounding solo with it, and is pretty essential, in my opinion, if your trying to mimic his sound.
Those who are saying it's in open A tuning are correct. But you can use power chords in standerd tuning if you want and it'll still sound good. I don't have time to tab it out real well for you, but here's a simple sketch.
All power chords with bass note on the A string.
Frets: 7....7..10..7..5..3...2

instead of an octave it sounds like to me he splits the signal, octave and then phase shifts one signal, and leaves the other one un altered.
