I know there is about a zero chance of getting an answer but I thought I'd give it a try. I'm trying to figure out what effect is playing over the top of the song called Innocent by the band Fuel.

Sounds almost violiny. There's one guitar playing chords and a lead guitar in the background doing something and then this other sound. It may not be a guitar I'm not sure.

If I find a link to the song I'll post I'm hoping someone might be familiar with it.

It could be Wurlitzer Piano or Fender-Rhodes with effects but NOT with this heavy band. Im used to hearing that a lot.
I think it is harmonics on the Les Paul, through flanger or a string-like patch or effects, or VIBRATO with nice reverb.

A similar thing is heard here, invented by the Buffalo Springfield IMO, but not as subtle, more pronounced, and you
can tell it is vibrato on an amplifier...

Thanks for taking the time Blue Jay to listen to the song. I've been searching for any clus on the net but haven't found any.

I don't have a flanger but the other guitar player does maybe we can give it a shot.

I hadn't checked out youtube yet but I'll give it a whirl when I get home.

That bit, right at the beginning, sounds like a ring modulator.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

grey

I've heard the term before but not exactly sure what it is. Is it a guitar effect? or somethign totally different. I guess I can look it up.

Well I just did some checking and found an article with some samples and I think you may be on to something there Grey. The examples weren't exactly like what I'm hearing but the potential is there.

It is curious, I get the message with the Blue Jay's first link:
This video contains content from Vevo, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds.

To me, it is more like a flanger or perhaps a phaser.

Nuno,

that vid shows just a very small and selective portion of the sounds that a ring modulator can produce. These will give a better idea of the effect:

Chris, I hope you can get your hands on that Flanger this weekend. Should be fun! 8) And let us know what U think. :P

I sent the link to my son and we email/talked about his Moogerfooger Ring Mod, the Gonkulators that he is familiar with, and my flangers that I enjoy. That's the type of sound & layers I can get from my Strat (or any Tele FWIW - moot point), as I mentioned, at Coffee Houses, except the prefab patches on the lazyman's ZOOM G1 were sounding similar and much better, big and fuller IMO, that I had to both respect and appreciate those a whole lot more, they uhhh... made my hack efforts sound almost like an orchestra. I like amps with real vibrato too, and delay. You can accompany yourself.

Well I had my instructor listen to it too, he thought it was just a flanger also. I don't have one but the other guitar player has one on one of his modelling amps and he tried it last night.

Sounded close not exact but that doesn't suprise me. the ring modulator might get the sound also but neither one of us has one and it doesn't make a sense to buy and effect for one song.

looks like it's an electro harmonix micro synth, according to the guitargeek database. probably drenched in studio reverb. makes sense.
