this is a link to a song which we have been asked to play for a wedding today (that is, we were asked today, its not the wedding for a while).

the playing looks very simple and straghtforward which is a bonus, but to my ears there is a little riff in the chorus which is using some sort of effect i cant put my finger on and i want to get it right if its a wedding request. i think perhaps it is a phaser but im not sure.

the riff starts at 2 minutes 7 seconds into the vid, and it is a real simple 4 note pentatonic box thing, but can anybody help me out with the effect the guy is using?

thanks.
Al

From Wiki - Kelly Jones - guitarist
He does not use many pedals, but in solos is well known for his use of his Dunlop CryBaby wah, and his crunchy, wah-driven solos are instantly recognisable. He also uses Boss effects pedals, including a chorus, delay, flange, phaser and various distortion pedals, although he is gradually getting rid of the distortion pedals and just using amp switching pedals using the built in crunch and clean settings, mainly using his AC30 for clean work and his other 2 amps for distortion.

Guess that narrows it down a bit; I feel that I detect a bit of flange or phase in that 4 note riff...Although it may be something as simple as a light touch on the wah pedal. I can get a similar sound at certain spots on my wah...

I just tried my gt10, I hadnt seen the wiki description of kelly jones equipment at the time and I tried matching sounds and the phaser, flanger and uni v all sound pretty close, I even tried auto wah and that was ok. I dont think having the exact effect is going to matter as long as you can get a rough match that makes that phrase stand out.

The riff at 2:07 has a chorus or maybe a phaser on it - it might be an effect that's on more of the guitar part but it comes out more when he plays those loud notes. I guess it could be a wah but it doesn't sound quite right to me.

There is a flanger going through pretty much the entire song, though, on the (synthesized?) bassline. It's really obvious in the first 10 seconds of the song. If you're playing this song with a non-synthesizer band, I think putting a flanger on the bass, especially at the beginning of the song, would help capture the feel quite a bit.
