Hi ive been trying to play the song Good riddance (time of your life) by greenday. i am getting better at it but keep seeing about 10-20 diff versions of the C9 chord for it, could somebody plz post the URL of a site that has the correct and/or easiest way to play the C9 chord? i would be extreamily gratefull
ty everybody and rock on!
I love this song, and have always played the C9 as x32033 (where G is 320033 for your reference). It sounds right to me.
Most of the sites which have TABs for this song have an error in them somewhere, either in the chord formations, the fingerpicking or the use of Em / Em9 in places (not sure about this one, I use Em9 as I like to keep the sound of the B and E strings contant throughout the song).

Pete, that "C9" would be a Cadd9 - for "add" chords, you do exactly what it says on the tin - add the 9th to the C chord, ie to the C E and G notes, you'd add a D note. For extended chords, you'd throw a b7 in there as well, as they're built in ascending thirds, so for C9 you'd need C E G A#(or Bb) and D. Easiest way I can think of to play that is as a barre chord.... 8, 10, 8, 9, 8, 10. (In other words, a barred C7 chord with an added D.)
The Em9 you mention - would that be 022033, like the one Oasis use in "Wonderwall?" In that song, the D and G notes on the B and E strings never change.....that particular chord (022033) is an Em7.

I've always played C9 like this
x32333
Ring finger barre's the GBE strings, pointer finger hits the 2nd fret of D, middle finger goes for 3rd fret of A.

Correct - use of the "9" without any other indicators tells you that it's built on a dominant chord; which must therefore include the Bb on the 3rd string (ditto 11ths and 13ths)
The chord in Time Of Your Life is Cadd9, as Vic mentioned.

That's not even close.
C9 = C, E, G, Bb, D. Your fingering is B, Eb/D#, Bb/A#, Eb/D#... most likely a voicing of Bmaj7 (B, D#, F#, A#)

How about 032030 for a C9 its real easy to finger, or if a Cadd9 barre at the third fret (mute the Lo E) and do the 3rd and 4th fingers on the 5th x35533.

032030 is C add 9 (C E G D)
X35533 is C add 9 (no 3rd) (C G D), C sus 2 (C D G) or even G SUS4 (G C D) depending on which side of the great SUS2 debate you're on. :lol:
