I am writing a Christmas play for my church and i saw the title of a Christmas carol that would be perfect for one of the opening scenes. I believe the carol is called "When the Angel Came to Mary" or something similar. Does anyone know how this goes or where I could find sheet music for it? I am googling as I write but just thought I would pop it out there in case someone knows from the tops of their head.

Thanks
Jim

Maybe "An Angel Came Down"?

There's a contemporary tune called "Mary, Did You Know" but it's not a carol.

That's all that comes to mind.

Thanks Slej. I'll take a look at "An Angel Came Down" Basically, I just need a song to be sung as the opening scene starts. In my play, the opening scene is Gabriel giving Mary the news that she is going to have a child. I thought a symbolic song prior to the scene opening up would be a good idea.

Thanks alot

Jim

Ah, okay then: "The Angel Gabriel" might be the one you want. The scene you describe is what that song is about.

Sometimes it's called "The Angel Gabriel From Heaven Came."

And here's the melody line, lyrics and guitar chords:

The same site also has the piano music if you need it.

Glad to be of help!

I had forgotten that Sting does a haunting version of that song, too, so check it out if you can. He calls it "Gabriel's Message."

Here it is arranged for guitar (in standard notation, and you'll need the free Scorch plug-in to see and play it):

Also here's a PDF of the same:

I'm putting that on my list of Christmas songs to learn this year.

Nice one, slejhamer...

Now speaking of Christmas carols - I'm starting to work on some Christmas carol lessons again this year. One I've arranged and recorded is "Love Came Down At Christmas" - it's a DADGAD arrangement, though I added a second part on the recording using harmonics tuned to DADGAC.

I've been really busy the last few months with some composing gigs, but never the less, I'm looking forward to writing some new lessons for GN. So if there are any requests, I'm looking for a few more carols to arrange for this year's lessons.

Sorry to hijack your thread geoo :) Good luck on your play. I remember last year I found a website that had some Christmas plays available for free. I found it when I was researching "Midnight Clear" last year.

Doug, I missed your reply (Or atleast I dont remember reading it) I'll be looking forward to the new lesson. (I found it after I wrote this. Looking forward to it.)

I am in need of new information. I am having trouble finding traditional versions of "Mary Did You Know" and "Little Drummer Boy" and we need them to make some practice CDs for the children to learn the songs. If someone doesnt mind looking through their Christmas Cds and letting me know the name of any CDs that have these two songs on them I would appreciate it..

Play is going well, and luckily I have lots of great help. Time is ticking though.

Jim,

I don't have any traditional versions of "Mary Did You Know," but we're actually getting ready to learn this song at our church - I'm using Kathy Mattea's version (we also used her version of "Christ Child's Lullaby).

On another note - I'm hoping to finish up another lesson today - the graphics are done, just need to write it - another Christmas carol...The Sussex Carol. This one will be an beginner's lesson in standard tuning.
