Time to restring, and while I have the strings off, I really should clean the junk off my frets thats been there for a while. How exaclty do I go about this? I've heard things about steel wool but am not totally sure, thanks.

The first time I heard a Beatles song was "Let It Be." Some little kid was singing along with it: "Let it pee, let it pee" and pretending he was taking a leak. Hey, that's what happened, OK?-some guy

I believe it's - 00000 Steel Wool

If you decide Steel Wool, when working with wood you want to go with the grain.

And,if you have a rosewood fretboard(maybe any fretboard), rub a little Danish oil on it.

If it's realy nasty, mild soapy water and a tooth brush. Dry it well after cleaning and rub some lemon oil on it.

Lemon oil is the way to go to get dirt/grime off.

I would only use the steel wool if you have minor imperfections on the frets you want to remove. And then, very gently with the 0000 (4 o's or more) steel wool and protect the fretboard with painters tape.

I've used lemon oil with a very soft cloth and it seems to work well. Be sure you go easy on the oil (use sparingly!).

I think the finest it gets is 0000 not sure but never use anything thicker...but just be gentle with the stuff...with a light touch barely polish between the frets...and run up and down a couple of times on each actual fret, all you need to do

But NEVER EVER use steel wool on a Maple fretboard, the finish will go bye bye!

ElPelotero,
ts actually 5 zeros...00000

If been restoring and refinishing fine antique furniture for years and never heard of 00000 steel wool - what is your source of supply because I would like to get some for both the guitars and use for refinishing wood.

Never mind - I checked an old forum where it is stated 0000 (4 zeros) steel wool is to be used by our administrator. Click on link below.

Yep 0000, I think I did see 00000 once, but I can't remember where. I've never seen it again.

Oil and steel wool are both best used rarely. Go with the grain and go easy.

If you find that the frets are getting dirty really quickly, try washing your hands once in a while

this website has probably been posted many times before...

http://www.frets.com

just look for the section on cleaning frets and neckboard.

in fact I just used the instructions to sand down my saddle for a proper 7/64" action and now my guitar feels like a million bucks.
