Well my friend just happened to get a 1967 mustang guitar from a family friend who didn't know the value of the guitar. My friend doesn't play guitar and wants to sell it to me for $120, it isn't the original color, I don't believe it has the original pickups, the fender signature on the neck has been sanded away for some reason. The serial number and the date stamp on the bottom of the neck and on the guitar is consistant with the year 1967. The reason his price is $120, is because I opened my mouth :x, which I regret doing. But, atleast he is not pricing it in the thousands.
I will have pictures soon.
What do you think it is worth?
I'd have to say without visual inspection of key parts of the instrument it would be hard to guess a true value.
Here's basis for comparison with a new one.

Check the patent number on the "Dynamic Fender Vibrato" - 1967 was the first year that Fender used the patent number on the Mustang vibrato. Previously it said "Pat Pend"
It should be: PAT. NO. 3,241,418
Headstock numbers and date stamps are very easy to fake nowadays. I'd think the vibrato number would be more difficult.
Also check the number on the neck plate against this list: http://www.smallclone.com/mustang/switch/serialn.htm
Hopefully you have a genuine Fender. If so, tell your friend I'll pay $125. :D

I'm back guys with good news, I just found out it's a 66, not a 67! What are the chances. I still have to update with pictures which will come shortly, I'll keep you guys posted!
a 66 Mustang could go for upwards of 1300$. no kidding.
however, your Mustang has lots of issues.
no decal, no original paint, pickups changed.
so it's not an original stock 66 Mustang.
it's probably worth a few hundred.
go to this site. they have real Mustangs at top prices. I think they are all over priced.
my first guitar in 65 was a brand new Mustang. the switches shorted . I never liked the tone. but it was all I could afford. I think it sold for 125$ then.
some folks like those guitars.
So guys, I still have no pictures but I bought it! He sold it to me for $ 125 and threw in his carlo robellie(sp?) bass. Both need some repair, the bass needs a neck adjustment and intonation, the 66 mustang needs an intonation adjustment, the saddles needs to be glued, a paint job (you wont believe what the previous owner did to the paint), and some LOVE!!
I've decided I will not sell it, I will restore it and play it. And in process, I will enjoy my time with it, and hopefully she will enjoy my company too.
