How does Dolly Parton hold her guitar without a strap, standing and still grasp it firmly enough to fingerpick the way she does?
I just saw her in 'Unlikely Angel'. I never noticed this before about her or anyone for that matter.

I'd like to learn how to hold guitar so easily as that. She makes it seem light as a feather whilst for me my guitar weighs a ton and I've never succeeded in learning how to fingerpick standing up even with a strap let alone without a strap.

Harmonics - The buzzing sound that string instruments make.

I searched the web and found several pictures where she does use a strap -- especially on electric. I also noticed she plays classical guitar at times. Maybe you saw her playing a classical? A classical strap hooks into the bottom edge of the soundhole, wraps down under the guitar to the backside where it becomes a loop worn around the neck. If one doesn't know what to look for, it might seem there is no strap.

thanks but if you watch her performance in 'Unlikely Angel' you'll see that there's clearly no strap anywhere near her or the guitar as she swings it out to put it down.

It's possible that being a film it was all a fabrication and not real so why bother with a clumsy strap?

But that's not very Dolly especially as she's such a maestro at playing in her particular style.

I can hold/play a guitar like that if I need to (if the strap falls off the button halfway through a song I can get to the end without having to stop, or if I'm sat without a strap and my mate spills tea down the back of the chair I'm sat on , I'll get up and find somewhere less scalding to sit without stopping), but it's not comfortable and I have to anchor my picking hand and strum carefully. Maybe she's just used to it?

How does one play guitar after one's wrists are shot? from Repetitive strain injury and tendonitis.
What's a wrist pick?

I do all the exercises for guitarists but what if exercises aren't enough?

Just a guess, but perhaps Dolly rests the guitar on her hips. Women can hold a baby on their hips for hours, a man has to hold the kid up.

It's all natural design. :D

Good call Wes. It makes sense, if you rest it on your hips, then you don't have to hold it up; all you have to do is apply enough pressure towards your body to keep it from tipping forward, and fretting alone probably does that. And classical guitars seem to be much lighter than acoustics and electrics.

I'd been meaning to post asking how Dolly plays guitar with her fingernails as long as they are! How does she fret notes on the fretboard?

Rahul, if you have never noticed the difference between men's and women's hips, you really need to pay more attention.

Wes :

Aren't hips the one which are behind ?

How can she play with her hands backwards ?

I believe you mean thighs and not hips...

Rahul,

I'll keep the anatomy lesson musical and give you the words of the song "Dem Bones":

Ezekiel connected dem dry bones
Ezekiel connected dem dry bones
Ezekiel connected dem dry bones
I hear the word of the Lord.

Your toe bone connected to your foot bone,
Your foot bone connected to your ankle bone,
Your ankle bone connected to your leg bone,
Your leg bone connected to your knee bone,
Your knee bone connected to your thigh bone,
Your thigh bone connected to your hip bone,
Your hip bone connected to your back bone,
Your back bone connected to your shoulder bone,
Your shoulder bone connected to your neck bone,
Your neck bone connected to your head bone,
I hear the word of the Lord!

Dem bones, dem bones gonna walk aroun'
Dem bones, dem bones, gonna walk aroun'
Dem bones, dem bones, gonna walk aroun'
I hear the word of the Lord!

Disconnect dem bones, dem dry bones
Disconnect dem bones, dem dry bones
Disconnect dem bones, dem dry bones
I hear the word of the Lord!

Your head bone connected from your neck bone,
Your neck bone connected from your shoulder bone,
Your shoulder bone connected from your back bone,
Your back bone connected from your hip bone,
Your hip bone connected from your thigh bone,
Your thigh bone connected from your knee bone,
Your knee bone connected from your leg bone,
Your leg bone connected from your ankle bone,
Your ankle bone connected from your foot bone,
Your foot bone connected from your toe bone,
I hear the word of the Lord!
