Why drums in a guitar forum, you ask? Well, as it turns out, my guitar teacher is also a drum teacher, so it would be really easy to take some drum lessons in place of guitar lessons.

I was thinking it might help improve my timing, which is one of my biggest struggles on the guitar. Plus, drums are fun. I am wondering if anyone here thinks it might be a good idea, since the opportunity is presenting itself.

If you feel your timing could do with improvement, then i think learning drums will DEFINITELY help.

It will also help you overall as a musician (more than just your timing), because it forces you to look at music from a somewhat different perspective.
it would be really easy to take some drum lessons in place of guitar lessons.

But then again, if you stop the guitar lessons while you're taking drum lessons, you won't notice the improvement as quickly... Maybe alternate between the 2 ???

I recently bought some Roland V-Drums and have noticed huge improvements in my timing on guitar in the past few months. And you're right... they're great fun :D

Good luck

J

Though I started as a classical percussionist and later a drummer, once I switched to guitar I let the drums go. A few years ago I started studying drums again with a jazz drummer, one of the best things I ever did. Some of the rhythmic concepts we covered definitley opened my eyes a bit and made me realize how it's easy as a guitarist to focus more on melody/harmony than rhythm, at least complex rhythm...part of lessons I had included these amazingly difficult etudes based on sub-divisions other than the comfortable quarter, eighth- and sixteenth-notes we use a lot when doing scales and solos on guitar. In fact, the next lesson I'll be submitting to GN is on applying some things I learned from drumming to guitar playing.

I don't think I answered your question, but I'd say if you can swing it, go for both.
