hi, wats the difference in EMGz compared to other styled pickups. and what do the numbers stand for? ex. 81,84,85, ect. Thanx for your help.

EMG's are active, in the same way that many basses are active: that is, they are powered, and actually have a battery in the guitar.

I believe the 81, 85, etc just refers to the year they were designed. Memory is pretty fuzzy, but I think that's right.

EMG now makes non-active pickups, which they call the HZ series. As far as I know, these are identical to other sorts of pickups in their method of function.

I think I remember reading 81s had been designed in 1979 and released in 1981 or something like that.
